It’s all about that passion. Reject the manufactured passion all these corporations and news outlets and social media sites are trying to twist you with, and embrace things you’re ACTUALLY passionate about, dedicate them extra time, even if it means saying no sometimes. It’s your life, not theirs

If we’re passionate about something and don’t feel any satisfying or positive emotions from it for too long, it flips and turns into total apathy or worse, on a timescale just long enough we’re only now starting to see it crop up everywhere, since it has been overused on us for a decade or more.

I think there’s just kind of a lot of everything being very tribal right now. Even in retail, corporate is manufacturing engagement via tribalism by forcing rivalries within the district.

There was this realization that tribalism is a hack to make us passionate, but it’s working too well.

Also, from a more practical standpoint, DMs would be yet another thing for their already pretty small team to have to moderate and protect against harassment and CSAM, and particularly aggressively too, as it would be the easiest way to harass others or exchange CSAM on the platform.

I think it’s very easy to project how you personally would use something onto everyone else, without considering how say, someone on exclusively desktop or mobile would approach it. It’s a common thing VR users overlook, it’s an easy trap to fall into.

VRChat focusing on what it does better than every text chat client - simulating hanging out with people - is how it would stay compelling. It should strive to be THE place to go if you want the virtual hangout thing, and not muddy itself with feature bloat not in service of that

I don’t see why VRChat has to serve all social functions, I was under the impression it’s for face to face communication and hanging out together while playing stuff. It doesn’t need to be discount Discord because we already have that if that’s what someone wants.

VRChat wants to look big and bustling and that’s a lot harder to do when most people who don’t have a headset on are by themselves somewhere and not populating instances together. Use a chat app instead if that’s what you want.

I just think it risks making the platform look less active to most people, which would be bad for the platform’s image when they’re trying to grow

It’s a more complicated issue than just how users feel about it by itself, it’s how it looks from the outside too

My issue isn't people standing around in social gatherings DMing each other, it's people doing that INSTEAD of going to those gatherings at all, sitting in their home world checking themselves out while using VRC like an IM client their whole night. It would absolutely happen.

Text chat isn't an alternative to actually going to where the person is that you want to talk to, and talking to them. This would be. Why even leave your home world if you're a desktop user with mostly desktop user friends?

Giving players - especially on desktop and mobile - an alternative to joining other players, that may actually be more convenient than joining other players, would just lead to fewer players joining each other, making the platform look less lively, more dead. That's not what VRC wants, is it?
