Our favorite roadside diner is usually packed. Yesterday, empty. I asked the owner why, she said “look around.” The street was abandoned. Construction workers were building at less than half staff.

“Everyone is gone. It’s ICE-Is. My cooks are gone. I had to hire someone who’s never cooked before.”
