Tis the season for gifts of wood. Charcuterie, cheese, or cutting boards are always a thoughtful and useful gift.

A hardwood "coaster" project is underway. Ready to cut to coaster thickness today. Lots of sanding and edge shaping ahead. Then, several coats of the final finish.

My Rikon bandsaw makes a number of tasks in the woodshop simple. The cuts maximize wood usage. Instead of planing a lot off a board and creating chip waste, you can resaw the board to close to your finished dimensions and then hand-plane and sand to a smooth surface.

My contribution to this work of pyrographic art by Christine White was merely to prepare the Cherry backer. Entitled "Spirit of the Wild" it is all based on photos that Chris has taken in Ontario's magnificent Algonquin Park while kayaking and hiking.

This work in pyrography by Chris White draws on the warmth of cherry wood to bring Ontario’s native animals to life. The bear, fox, raccoon, wolf, and songbirds are portrayed with intimate detail, reminding us of the enduring wildness of our forests.

One of the handiest items in my workshop is my rolling "Assembly and Downdraft Table". Dog holes are available for clamping and holding items or assembling frames. Then, there is the very useful downdraft sanding drawer pull-out to reduce dust in the air.

To counteract the many years of the downward pull of gravity, I made a little stepstool for the workshop. I'm certain that I used to be taller many moons ago.

My Rikon bandsaw is perfect for resawing. I had a couple of Maple firewood length pieces sitting in my shop and determined that, once sliced, these would be perfect for a project.

Oh Canada!
I was happy to be asked to create a set of frames for two new original artworks by Christine White.
The dual-panel paintings are entitled "Northern Escape".
They feature textured relief that adds depth and realism to one of her favourite inspirations: Ontario's northlands

A regional Outdoor Studies Centre commissioned some Ontario animal profiles to be used as an indoor activity during inclement weather. The wood of choice was a special order of marine-grade Baltic Birch. The trusty scroll saw was used to create these.

Some precision cutting - walnut. The Pegas scrollsaw is vibration-free and the Pegas Modified Geometry blades track true. All that is needed then is steady feeding and fine-tuned eye-hand coordination.
