...I'm still searching for 25 out of 64 Buffalo nickels and 23 out of 33 Liberty nickels. I completed the Jefferson series with box 238. The quest goes on.

This was my 5th Belgium Franc. I keep notable finds in a spreadsheet, I should create a summary of the totals for each country.

Followup question - why bother to mint them at all as presumably the plan was to melt them anyway once they got to England? vs just delivering the required total weight of gold/silver in bulk form?

Any estimates how many were minted?

You search muddy fields, I search boxes of rolls of coins. In the last nickel box I searched, one of the rolls had a dime, and another had a cardboard disc :)

(The 1943 nickel top left was minted during WWII, the USA used silver during the war as the nickel was needed for the war effort)

I got started in SW back in 1978. I miss all the stations, not just the gov run SWBC outlets but particularly the small independent tropical band stations. 99% of that is gone now - no listeners.

That's why I am primarily a pirate radio listener today. It's the only thing left that is interesting.

Who says this, other than a few extremists on the fringe?

There's a huge spectrum of radio news in the USA, from Fox on the right to ABC/NBC/CBS/etc. in the middle-ish to NPR on the left to Pacifica on the far left.

China & religious stations dominate SW because they're the only ones who still pretend there's a huge audience. I assume in both cases because those that pay the bills have been tricked into thinking there's still listeners - likely by those who work at the radio stations and like their job :)
December 26, 2025 at 7:45 PM
But there's not enough of an audience to justify it. You can't sell enough ad spots to pay the bills, and the handful of listeners aren't going to be sending in checks. This is why SW is dying - no audience. And MW is pretty much in the same boat in much of the world.

Stig discovered why MW/SW stations are going off the air. There's no real audience, and the number of us radio hobbyists is a rounding error.

Rather than running 24/7 operations, a few hours a week of broadcasts each from lots of stations makes more sense. Many of us call that "pirate radio" :)
