I was very fortunate. My mentor of 25 years - and best man at my wedding despite being 34 years older than me - was a protege of both Bertrand Russell and Dewey. I read Dewey in his course Philosophical Foundations of Education. Dewey became one of my heroes - as did Russell.

Indeed. When I was a grad student at Columbia the primary classroom in the philosophy department had a long oval wooden table, a dozen or so leather wing backed chairs, and a giant oil painting of Dewey, persistently looking down at us….
