In probation and parole, success isn’t just compliance. Stability is the real measure. Housing, work, and the ability to plan a life beyond the next appointment are what allow people to move forward and support safer communities.

I’ve learned that leadership isn’t just about pushing for results. When clarity, energy, or purpose are ignored, the cracks show quickly. Sustainable performance comes from staying present, making thoughtful choices, and taking care of the people doing the work, including yourself.
Why 2026 demands authentic CEOs
Stale leadership is so 1980s, so begin this year with these five directives.

I didn’t grow by waiting to be recognized. I grew by learning on my own, seeking out people who challenged me, and taking on work that stretched me. Skills like #communication and adaptability compound quietly over time. Investing in yourself is part of taking responsibility.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a reminder that dignity isn’t something you earn.

I came to this country as a kid and learned that systems don’t always see your full humanity. Dr. King knew real progress requires cultural change, not just laws.

The work is still unfinished.

🚫 Myth: Probation and parole reliably lead to freedom.
✅ Fact: Technical violations often turn them into extended punishment.

When systems block progress, the damage reaches families, communities, and public safety. System design determines outcomes.

Planning beyond today determines whether support is still there for the next person who walks through the door. Access and stability belong to the same leadership responsibility.

We took a cooking class while traveling and quickly realized it wasn’t about competence. It was collaborative, imperfect and shared. Trying something new alongside others has a way of widening perspective, even when you’re not particularly good at it.

One of the biggest leadership lessons I took from last year was how closely self care is tied to showing up 100%. When leaders are stressed and stretched thin, staff notices. Prioritizing self care has changed how I lead and that's not a luxury, it's part of the responsibility.

Belief shows up in action. I see it when probation and parole systems invest in stability instead of punishment, support instead of surveillance alone. When policy creates real paths forward, families and communities are stronger for it.

Earlier this month I spent time with LGBTQ+ CFOs and finance leaders in DC. What started in 2020 as crisis support has grown into real shared leadership.

Grateful to HRC for hosting, and to a community that shows what leadership looks like when we choose transparency, shared learning, and care.

The progress I see in probation and parole reentry isn’t in reports. It’s in people succeeding because they finally have housing, support and someone willing to help them problem solve instead of only monitor them. That kind of support changes lives and strengthens communities.

As the year winds down, I’ve been thinking about what real development looks like. It’s usually not about reviews or big moments. It’s the steady support leaders give and the opportunities they make for people to grow.

Silence in a meeting can seem harmless, but it may mean people don’t feel safe to speak. The strongest teams I’ve worked with are the ones where questions and disagreements are welcomed. Leaders shape that environment every day.

My hardest seasons are what helped shape my direction. Growth often happens long before we notice it. If you feel unsure right now, trust the process. The effort you’re making is building the foundation for what comes next. What lesson changed your direction?

Diversify your portfolio beyond dollars. Financial wealth is only one measure of success. The strongest returns often come from relationships, credibility and purpose. Money matters, but meaning multiplies.

Determined people make an impact when they work together. A visit with leaders at the United Justice Coalition earlier this year reminded me how collaboration moves communities forward. Grateful for the teams who keep showing up and supporting this work every day.

I attended a conversation led by Oprah Winfrey about caregiving and loss. I shared a memory of my grandmother, who lived with Alzheimers, and how that experience taught me that connection and love are what stay with us. I’m grateful I could share it.

Eric and I started a new Thanksgiving tradition: spending the holiday abroad.

Life can take you far when you're open to new experiences.

Wishing everyone a holiday week that brings rest, connection, and moments that remind you what matters most.

We plan for expenses, investments, and savings, but rarely for rest.
This season, I’m budgeting for balance: time to rest, recharge, and reflect.
Because wealth isn’t just what you earn, it’s the energy to enjoy what you’ve built.

I’m grateful for a team that leads with care and conviction — for the late nights, the tough questions, and the way people show up for each other when it matters most.
Gratitude in leadership means seeing strengths, not just results.
What does gratitude mean to you?

I recently attended the 35-year anniversary gala for HealthRight International, an organization expanding access to healthcare for communities too often left behind.

Health is more than care, it’s dignity. Grateful for the people and partners doing this work every day.

Attending the recent Hispanic Leadership Summit at the United Nations was a powerful reminder of what representation looks like in action.

Leadership, ownership, equity and visibility are not abstract goals. They’re the foundation of lasting change.

It's been a year of change and growth so far. The peak has been seeing systems rebuilt and culture strengthened at REFORM. The valley? Exhaustion and finding time to slow down. A quiet book, music, good wine, real conversation. Rest isn’t a pause in the work; it’s what keeps it going.
