Satoru returns to Jujutsu Tech just before midnight that day. He’s not tired, but feeling like he should be weighs him down just the same. The dorms are silent but for the gentle creaking of old wood and a draft whisting through an open window. Satoru leaves the lights off as he shuffles into the kitchen. Then he does a double take at the sight of a foil-wrapped meal set out on the table. There’s a note, which Satoru carries to the open fridge to read. It’s his name in Suguru’s neat, blocky handwriting. Embarrassingly, Satoru’s throat feels tight. This is what he wants, really. The boyfriend treatment. Sweet gestures, chaste kisses, all of Suguru’s attention. Everything else is optional. He eats his yakisoba and pretends the taste of a homemade meal prepared specifically for him doesn’t make him misty eyed. It’s mostly the late hour and his accumulated fatigue, he’s sure. Satoru wakes up at six the next day, yet still misses Suguru before the other boy leaves for a mission in Kyoto. Shoko’s gone, too, on a separate assignment, something about a bunch of injured Zen’in apprentices, according to a mostly mute, uncaffeinated Yaga. Satoru will be gone on his own mission before they return. Working more quickly won’t solve it. Travelling to distant parts of Japan is what takes up most of their time. Satoru’s bad luck holds for several days. He texts Suguru, though the conversation feels stilted, like they’re both waiting for something. Satoru also decides to amuse himself by giving Suguru an approximation of what things could be like. He buys omiyage, cooks enough for two and wraps up Suguru’s portions, and convinces Yaga to swap some of their missions based on which of them are likely to net Suguru cooler cursed spirits. It’s fun, coming up with all these little ideas, especially when Suguru reciprocates in kind. Satoru finds creepy little dolls and Diogimon keychains in his room when he comes back from a mission, boxes of mochi with his name on them in the kitchen, and even a sweet-smelling bunch of osmanthus flowers, stuck into a tall glass in lieu of a proper vase. Satoru’s whole room fills with the scent. It clings to his nostrils and shudders in his lungs wherever he goes. Shoko catches on on day five, when she notices Satoru dividing his gyudon into exactly two portions. “What’s up with you two?” she asks, leaned halfway out the window to smoke while her own dinner, some kind of stew, simmers on the stove. “What do you mean?” “You’ve been kinda disgusting about your situationship recently.” “My what now?” “You know what I’m talking about, Gojo, stop playing.” He does know, and he wants to gush about all the sweet gestures, but it feels premature somehow, like acknowledging it might break the spell. “Pretty sure you think I’m always disgusting, so you’ll have to be more specific.” Shoko’s sharp bark of laughter releases a big plume of smoke. “You and Geto both. He’s not off the hook just because I tolerate him better.” “You love us. Don’t deny it.” “Hmm.” Shoko leans her elbows on the sill and tilts her head way back, impressively flexible. Or maybe her back’s just messed up. “I do love having two big gorillas to handle the curses while I play with dead bodies.” She snaps back up to watch Satoru write Suguru’s name on a post-it note and stick it to the foil. “So are my gorillas mating in the bushes or what?” “Damn, Shoko, you’re into some wild stuff.” “Did you know you can’t repel questions with Limitless? Spill.” Satoru pretends to hem and haw as he sets Suguru’s bowl aside and tucks into his own. “Dunno what you want me to say,” he answers with his mouth full of beef. “A bush seems like a very inconvenient location.”
