It's a big plus if everyone in the XI can contribute with the bat. But having extra bowling options - four spinners (and six bowlers) - on a spin-friendly pitch gives no real advantage. India should replace one of the spinners with a proper batter for the second Test.

These extreme pitches are clearly not helping India. They have now lost four of their last six home Tests. The last time this happened was in 1972.

My first introduction to Bob Simpson was through his columns in Sportstar. Always full of insights and keeping up with the times. Only later did I realise that he was a solid opener, a handy legspinner and an excellent slip fielder. And above all, an era-defining coach. Rest in peace, Simmo.
