The fact he even had to ask that about an activity so basic is… what the hell am I doing to make him think that? I’m finally getting back to some normalcy, I thought it’d be obvious. Clearly I’m worrying them. I need to convince them I’m fine before they start asking more questions. Stress isn’t good for them. Just shove the jacket over there… When’s the last time I wore a different outfit? I don’t even know. Not important right now. Ugh… maybe that’s why she asked. I wouldn’t be surprised. Just pat down the hair and get the hell out. Tristan is waiting on you. Phone, keys, wallet… phone, keys, wallet… _ “So what brings Bambi here so often these days?” Maldo asks me in a cheerful tone. “You know, I'm not actually sure!” I say precisely as rehearsed, leaning back in the booth seat to distract myself from my heart racing at the question. “I don’t really know what goes on in his head, but I'm glad he's spending more time with Tristan, ‘cus he sure is getting a kick out of it, aren'tcha?” “Mmfgkfgh!” Tristan is utterly destroying his pizza. He hurriedly swallows his bite. “Yeah!!!” “Slow down, kiddo! We're in no rush!” “I knoooww…” I couldn’t possibly ask for a better goofball of a son. I can’t help but smile. He’s so much like myself. “It’s been wonderful having him here,” Maldo says, happily closing his eyes. “I’ve always wanted to talk to him more to understand him better.” Ah. Shit. My ‘project’. But they surprised me next Christmas by making her real!!! They were showing me how she works and everything, and it was so cool!!! Wanna see what she can do?” Tristan’s eagerness to talk about his interests was endearing. He interrupted himself and tripped over his words much like he’s heard Dave do. Playrobot blinked and smiled idly as he talked. “Sure.” Tristan explained all the things she could do - play games, talk, describe the time and weather, and even do basic math. She had a voice recognition thing that could tell who was speaking to her if she spent enough time talking to a person. Some of it he didn’t really understand, but he was happy to let the kid ramble. As Tristan spoke, she stared at him and leaned forward, like she was interested in what he was saying. “...and apparently, they spent five months building her. Can you believe it? Five whole months, just for a Christmas present! I could tell they were doing something, ‘cus they were being all funny about working on something, and they kept trying to tell me it was just something boring that I wouldn’t be interested in, but it was driving me crazy not knowing what it was! Dad would…blue Dad would know more about that, you should ask him!” “Huh.” Bambi nodded, staring at Playrobot’s face. “Didn’t know people-robots were a thing.” “Most people don’t. That’s because Maldo’s special! She’s not like other robots. Dad says she’s a really advanced one with cutting-edge technology. I can’t imagine why anyone would ditch her! But it’s a good thing my parents didn’t, ‘cus when she woke up, they all became friends and stuck together! And not long after that, well, they found me!” The boy is smiling ear-to-ear, beaming with energy. “Did Dad tell you that story?” “Yes,” he said thoughtfully, watching Playrobot giggle and begin to spin in a slow circle. Years ago Dave and Muko explained to Bambi the situation with Tristan’s biological family in great detail. That was the first, and one of the few, times he had seen Dave angry enough to tremble. The information was shocking. Abandonment and neglect, from what they could tell. They had found the poor child wandering the street alone at night in dirty clothes, hungry, thirsty, and very quiet. He didn’t cry once. He was perfectly fine with being taken into the arms of strangers. When they tried to locate his parents, nothing came up. consider. dave stargazing with tristan and bambi & pointing out constellations to them. even if he can't pursue his original dreams with space travel, nothing could ever take away his passion for space... perhaps it even rubbed off on his son, raising him to love the night sky too
