It is interesting to me how international women's day has become so mainstream. It originated in the socialist movement. My first memory of celebrating it stems from 1976, a big event that filled the Mansion House in Dublin, initiated by the CPI, with speakers from Chile & USSR.

What we are witnessing in not just a rogue administration but a vast and powerful system in decline. The news everyday in "the west" brings news of how the elites are dragging us ever deeper into the morass.

Scrolling on RedNote, I am struck by how young people from US and China are talking about their lives and societies. Much individual detail, but what is most striking is a strong sense of one society plunging downward while another is surging forward.

This week I cast my ballot for the Seanad election. It is the last time that university senators will be elected in this way. Next time all Irish citizens who are graduates of Irish 3rd level institutions can vote. Register by 23-1-25 at seanadvoter.ie

Happy new year insofar as possible with such dark forces on the horizon. Liberals are fretting about what Trump might do, but it is so much bigger than that. It is a civilisational crisis. It is an empire in decline wreaking havoc on the world as it goes down. Resist and build.
