I'm only here for the birds. And, as it turns out, what's good for birds is good for people, too.
Even in areas growing wetter, climate change's intense rainfall increases flood risk rather than replenishing water tables. With countries that supply much of the world's food facing drought, food shortages are a serious risk: www.theguardian.com/environment/.... 🌎

Adorable, especially the one who seems hopeful you have snacks.

A recent paper concluded that the loss of vultures increased human deaths by >4% because of the large negative shock to sanitation. What happened? Painkillers used to treat cattle were toxic to vultures + deliberate poisonings. What's being done: wapo.st/3XUWoma (gift). 🌎 #birds
Humans killed millions of vultures. Now people are paying the price.
The near-extinction of vultures in India has had severe consequences.

When those lands start to look neglected, it's all the excuse needed to sell them to the private sector. Please call your senator and representatives and demand that they fully fund our public lands and pay the staff, including back pay. How to contact and sample script in alt text. Thank you! 🌎

...twice as many hoverflies, ~50% more butterflies, and a richer variety of bats compared to human-made ponds or free-flowing streams. The research is critically important to support rebounding beaver populations and address declining insect numbers: www.anthropocenemagazine.org/2025/11/beav.... 🌎
Beaver-engineered habitats are outperforming ours

The one bright spot in the Trump administration is that the heir apparent is, as you note, anticharismatic.

Wow. I hadn't seen the whole rant. Where to begin in unpacking this...

I just watched it, too. I agree: a really lovely film.

Trump's EPA also just got rid of Biden-era limits on fine-particle pollution. Do they think that air pollution--and its health issues--will affect only "everyday Americans" and not them?

Expect even more bad environmental news around the holidays, when Trump hopes we’re not paying attention. 🌎

Methane is considered a super pollutant: it breaks down more quickly than CO2, but it traps about 80 times as much heat in the atmosphere in the short term. It is also responsible for ~1/3 of the rise in global temperature since the Industrial Revolution: www.nytimes.com/2025/11/26/c... (gift). 🌎

No wonder Girri is so large: mum is feeding her enough for 3 chicks. Gimbir still seems more of an observer than a participant in the whole parenting thing. Love that Girri gets so full she slips into a food coma standing up--she is adorable. Thanks, SKH, for the charming video!

Thank you, Casey. I do try to verify all my posts and use reliable sources; we don't need more false information floating around. I very much appreciate everyone who reads and shares the posts--knowledge is our power!

Girri is adorable! And still very noisy. She reminds me of Soledad as she's very insistent on proper parental attention. Thanks, SKH, for another delightful video.
