It’s insidious - and it’s always hard because she was always good to me, but that opinion she holds, or is promoting and is okay with promoting, hurts me and those I care about. It’s not the first time it’s happened, of course. Always so disappointing.

I was 15 when my high school teacher started grooming me. I did NOT understand what was happening. I did NOT have the wisdom, courage & strength of the person I am today. Today, I wish I could have protected my younger self, who had a history of childhood sexual abuse that made me a perfect victim.

It continues in Florida schools today. Just last year, a teacher at the same school where my sister teaches was found guilty and sentenced to prison. He encouraged and supported his victim while she contemplated suicide. He bought her the rope.

What’s worse, teacher predation of minors was rampant in my high school. He wasn’t the only one, and a colleague of his at another school was arrested, charged and went to prison. I wish my parents had taken action but they didn’t want to “ruin my high school career.” Too late!

Multiple students across generations have tried to report him, but never succeeded due to his popularity within the community. I tried 20 years later with no direct evidence and didn’t want to relive my trauma by talking to him to try and trap him into confessing. There were other issues, too.

I wish the teacher that groomed and assaulted me was on this list, but he’s never been held accountable, and I did try.

All you need to do is google “male teacher arrested for sexual assault” or “male pastor arrested for sexual abuse” or “male politician arrested for sexual misconduct” - facts are facts, and sharing transphobic rhetoric confirms your own ignorance and bigotry, even when you imply you “may not” agree.

I definitely learned the word and that is was a harmful word to hurt Black people, but I don’t know how or where I learned it, or who from. Same with the KKK reference; I can’t remember if it was a stranger, a friend, or worse, a family member.

I’m in the camp of having been told I have a Cherokee ancestor (we do have a picture of a woman who *could* be Native) but have no blood test or other evidence to confirm. It also hasn’t prevented me from making ignorant mistakes regarding Native people, despite being raised to deeply respect them.
