An additional protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights is crucial to protect all human rights from environmental degradation.

We cannot wait any longer for the @coe.int to align with the growing international momentum!

Civil society has spoken. Experts have spoken. Parliamentarians have spoken.

Now it’s time for the @coe.int to act.

The right to a #HealthyEnvironment can’t wait any longer.

The @coe.int must begin negotiating an additional protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights – one that protects the right to a healthy environment.

The environmental crisis isn’t waiting. Why should the Council?

The time for excuses is over.

Europe is the only continent without a regional human rights instrument explicitly protecting the right to a healthy environment.

That’s despite decades of calls from MPs, the UN, legal experts, and civil society like us.

Finally, last week, the Committee replied!

The Rapporteur Group on Human Rights will “begin the examination of this question at one of its forthcoming meetings.”

Our Campaign fully agrees with the @pace.coe.int Committee.

The @coe.int must assume its role in addressing one of the greatest threats to human rights.

A healthy environment is not a luxury, but a right. It's time for Europe to protect it as such! ✊

For the Committee, this would be a concrete step to implement the 2023 Reykjavik Declaration, where @coe.int leaders committed to stronger action on human rights & the environment.

ICJ confirmed States’ legal duties to act on the climate crisis. No more delays are acceptable.

The @pace.coe.int Committee on Social Affairs, Health & Sustainable Development stated that “[the @coe.int] must adopt a binding legal instrument to guarantee the right to a healthy environment”.

This is “indispensable to guarantee citizens a safe and viable environment.”
