I’m Gonna Love You is definitely some couple’s first dance song at a country wedding. I’m sure the song reaches some people, but I am just not able to connect with it at all. It’s too generic for me and I never get the chance to get hooked in. It’s not a bad song, but it does nothing for me

78: I’m Gonna Love You (Cody Johnson, Carrie Underwood) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy9P...

Of the two dozen songs so far, this is easily the most love song/ballad-y yet. It’s a straightforward song that is exactly what it says on the tin, with Carrie Underwood to provide some star power

At some point Jelly Roll has to change gears, right? Even if it’s a full-on turn to Christian contemporary, at least it would be an evolution of his sound. I’m sure there’s more to the guy, but what winds up on these lists paint a very monochromatic picture of the guy.

79: I Am Not Okay (Jelly Roll) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qop5...

I Am Not Okay came out at just the right time to appear at about the same spot on the year-end list two years in a row, and once again I am wishing this is the My Chemical Romance song of the same name

Backup Plan doesn’t strive to tread new ground, but despite its genericness it serves its purpose. It’s a feel-good song with a country music-level pun about “getting back up is the only backup plan you need,” and Combs is a strong feature. I wouldn’t want 100 of these songs, but I’ll still take one

80: Backup Plan (Bailey Zimmerman feat. Luke Combs) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gQe...

A country song that sounds like it has real instruments? Say it ain’t so! I remember Zimmerman on this chart a couple years ago for songs that also rocked, so I’m glad he’s stayed the course on his second album

81: Jingle Bell Rock (Bobby Helms) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIhs...

I mean, it’s Jingle Bell Rock. I’m not sure what else to say here. I guess it helps that there’s only one major cover of the song (by Hall and Oates), which probably helped Helms do well on the chart.

I have never gotten into Tate McRae’s music. It flows into one ear and out the other. The instrumentation is too muted and she doesn’t do enough with her vocals to compensate. It’s not a song to dance to or rock out to or belt out; it’s a track to “vibe” to and I’m not someone who does that

82: Revolving Door (Tate McRae) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwlF...

Is this really the first western pop song on the list, nineteen hits in? Tate McRae’s now on her third album, and she continues to pump out hits, this time about never being able to leave a toxic relationship

What It Sounds Like would be a far more effective song if each of the three members of Huntr/x were on more equal footing. Give each of them a verse about defeating their own demons and accepting the support of each other! Instead it feels somewhat incomplete and uneven

83: What It Sounds Like (Huntr/x) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK0j...

This is the big ballad at the climax of KPop Demon Hunters where they have that moment of self-realization and save the day. Well, Rumi does; we don’t really get to see Mira and Zoey’s struggles that much

This is the logical conclusion of where Jelly Roll is going. It’s a standard song about overcoming struggle and praise that I can easily see being played at the 11:00 service. I wouldn’t be hyped to hear it on the radio, but if I’m gonna hear a Christian song on this list, I could do a lot worse

84: Hard Fought Hallelujah (Brandon Lake, Jelly Roll) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJNF...

You can tell it’s been a weak year for music when a Christian contemporary song makes the list. It has spent 34 weeks at #1 on that chart, which is somehow less than a third of the record-holder among CCM

I've never liked Drake, but by pairing up with PartyNextDoor he ensures that he's not the worst thing on this track. Was the audio mixer trying to sabotage it? It sounds like it’s deliberately trying to be as annoying as possible. It’s not as bad as certain Drake projects, but it’s still not good

85: Somebody Loves Me (PartyNextDoor, Drake) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvU2...

Drake is still around making music, but last year’s evisceration by Kendrick Lamar certainly did a number on his fortunes. This is one of only two songs of his to make the year-end list, which is low by his standards

Thing is, I kinda dig Liar outside of the above. Like, if this were my first exposure to Jelly Roll, I’d be really into it. It’s got solid country rock production without coming across as generic and it feels authentic to Jelly Roll as a person. All he needs to do is expand his horizons a little bit

86: Liar (Jelly Roll) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcNI...

Jelly Roll is making his whole career one big repentance tour, and it’s getting old. We get it, you’re trying to atone for your past sins, but you are allowed to sing about something else once in a while

What I’m realising is that trying to just read the Genius translations of the lyrics does the song a disservice. Thankfully, music videos are still huge in Latin America. I don’t think I vibe with this genre of music as much as I do reggaeton, but I appreciate that it doesn’t sound over-processed

87: Tu Boda: (Oscar Maydon, Fuerza Regida) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ymi...

Is it just me, or does the melody sound a lot like Olivia Rodriguo’s Vampire but with horns? Regardless, this is a Regional Mexican hit that spent 11 weeks at #1 in Mexico, and so unsurprisingly it crossed over here

I feel like I’m listening to a Morgan Wallen wannabe here. He’s got that same autotune that washes away any sense of authenticity and gives me the impression that everything interesting has been sanded off. The backing track does build up over time, so I guess it surpasses that extremely low bar

88: After All the Bars Are Closed (Thomas Rhett) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5on...

This is the second country song in a row about spending some time together after the party. At least 20 Cigarettes had some sense of story. There’s barely any lyrical content here as the track is about 70% chorus

Bad Bunny knows what he’s doing. The song opens with a sample of a 70s salsa song about New York, and then transitions seamlessly to his verses, where he references Washington Heights and Juan Soto among others. He sounds loud and ready to paint the town without actually coming across as too noisy

89: Nuevayol (Bad Bunny) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU5V...

This is the first of four songs from Bad Bunny, future Super Bowl headliner and probably the biggest artist in the world. Nuevayol is an homage to New York, which is obvious in hindsight, but I had to look it up embarrassingly enough

Y’know, maybe if Wallen didn’t release a 37-song album he would have had time to flesh out these songs. Tell a proper story about the night! 2:40 is not long enough to properly explore the song. It would even make the namedrops of liquor brands and songs I’d rather be listening to feel more organic

90: 20 Cigarettes (Morgan Wallen) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCv0...

I feel like there’s potential here, but the execution just isn’t quite there. I thought for sure he'd continue to start his verses with the number of cigarettes left, but he was too busy singing about hooking up in his truck bed
