I might not be able to tell you what I’ve been working on, but rest assured, I’m having a great time doing it.

…we skated over to Fontana to catch Suga Free, and 2nd II None tear the house down at Stage Red. It was an incredible night full of West Coast legends. I felt like I was in that movie Swingers, but with much better music and cooler friends.

Last night, my friends and I achieved the impossible by driving 60 miles across the Inland Empire to make sure we attended TWO hip-hop shows at the same damn time. We saw DJ Quick, Hi-C, and Mister CR at the Garden Amphitheater, and then…

- Bourbon old-fashioned from Fanny’s

- An Academy Museum screening of HEARTS OF DARKNESS (my favorite documentary about filmmaking)

- With Gia and Roman Coppola in person to celebrate Eleanor Coppola’s legacy and new book

Helluva night!

I was heartbroken when I learned about her passing in 2006. I felt like the film industry suffered a massive loss, and it hurt to know I would never get the chance to meet her in person, let alone work with her, which was a huge dream of mine. Thankfully, her music lives forever.

Most of her catalog is horror and superheroes, which explains why she was such a predominant influence in my life. When I finally dared to explore horror movies in depth, it became a fun experience because I found Shirley Walker’s music on many of them.

I believe Shirley Walker’s score is the best Batman score ever made. Shirley captured the character's emotionality and complexity — her music sounded mysterious, charming, dark, adventurous, and forever epic. And like that, as quick as you could say “Batarang,” I was Shirley Walker’s biggest fan.

Cue young Henry rushing home after class to be swept away by her sensational work on BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES.

From there, Shirley Walker made film history by becoming the first woman to compose and record the soundtrack for a major Hollywood motion picture — MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN.

After orchestrating and conducting scores for kick-ass films like BATMAN, DICK TRACY, GHOULIES, NIGHTBREED, PACIFIC HEIGHTS, and WHITE FANG, she composed the music for Warner Television’s live-action series, THE FLASH.

Shirley Walker started her career working with the best artists in the industry. In San Francisco, she played keyboard on the APOCALYPSE NOW recording sessions, which opened the door for her to co-compose THE BLACK STALLION with Carmine Coppola.

An appreciation post for my favorite film composer to ever do it, the great Shirley Walker (April 10, 1945 – November 30, 2006)

Notorious B.I.G. and Hooverphonic had the same taste in music: Issac Hayes’ WALK ON BY has been sampled by many incredible artists over time, but the most notable for me are WARNING from Biggie’s READY TO DIE album and 2 WICKY from the I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER soundtrack.

Did y’all know that Jewel had a rap track?

This soundtrack legitimately slays.

DJ Scratch opened the show and had the crowd in the palm of his hand.

Mobb Deep, Raekwon, Big Noyd, the RZA, DJ Scratch, and Medz on the drums. Real hip-hop was definitely in the building.

1995 was all the way live tonight when these absolute legends celebrated two of the greatest albums ever made. Happy 30th “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...” and “The Infamous.” 🙌🥃

For the death of me, I can't remember why this flick was called Dreamcatcher. . . was there even a dreamcatcher in it?

It’s been a minute since I've gotten to sit down and watch a movie in its entirety, and I’m happy to report that LADYHAWKE still rips.

I love the life this record has lived: a big ol’ chip in its sleeve, a personalized label that I will never take off from Western Connecticut State University, and even the playback has so much personality. Thank you, Dj-RonIce, whoever you are.

THE INFAMOUS by MOBB DEEP may be the best rap album ever made. Whenever I put it on, it sends me right back to freestyle cyphers in the gymnasium. I can’t believe I get to see the whole thing be performed live by the remaining members of Mobb Deep, next Tuesday at the Wiltern.
