bought two used CDs yesterday and only now realized they both have Beach Boys links

Slow Dazzle features “Mr. Wilson,” a tribute to Brian, and the Yo La Tengo album includes a cover of “Little Honda”

if you can look at this album cover and not feel compelled to at least find out what this band sounds like, if not buy it on the spot, then I don't know what to tell you

drew a fox in pencil a few weeks ago and still really happy with how he turned out. feel like I should finish it but I’m afraid of wrecking it.

also he actually looks sort of like a real fox so that’s cool.

it kind of reminds me of their sloppier compilations that would have an incoherent mix of oldies and more mature songs. but I also wonder how a casual fan who only knows the hits would react to flipping thru this and reading some of the lyrics.

the book carries a 1984 copyright date, which explains why Dennis isn’t on the cover. but Brian looks so little like himself that I thought he might be Dennis at first!

we found this collection of Beach Boys sheet music at the library book sale yesterday.

how “complete” it is very much depends on what era of the band you’re talking about, but it does include Ding Dang so that’s good enough for me.

saw Wolf Alice in the Beaches last night. great concert, loved the energy and the crowd was hyped too — focus was on their new album but I was also happy to hear lots of stuff from their third LP (my intro to the band and an all-time fave) ❤️

honestly, usually nothing. but he did have this cassette in the car. instrumental honky-tonk piano.

I do remember listening to Dark Side of the Moon in the car with him once, but the tape belonged to me, not him.

Wand at the Sound Garage in Toronto last night (plus opening solo set by @coryhanson.bsky.social). good trip was had by all.

today’s thrift finds

I have low expectations of the RS jazz book but still couldn’t resist. also I recently found an old PC in my parents’ basement that I didn’t realize they still had, so I figured I’d grab SimCity 2000 for when I get it up and running again

played George Harrison’s Electronic Sound album all the way through the other day, and it’s amazing what a visionary he was, to gaze into the future and accurately predict what a malfunctioning Atari would sound like

sometimes I win the fight against my completist tendencies, and sometimes I don’t

(CDs at the thrift store were 50% off so this cost me 47 and a half cents. it’s still pretty bad.)

finally got my hands on the new @shura.gg album... ordered it through my local store but there was some miscommunication so it only showed up this week. now it's mine at last.

six years since Forevher (still an all-time fave)... so pleased to have some new Shura sounds to fill my head with.

found this abandoned “Boom Book” at the corner of Queen and Pape, and reader, let me tell you, I thought about it for a minute

yesterday morning I cooked myself breakfast using eggs and veggies left over in the TO house I’m staying at, and it was so damn satisfying.

also they had Cocteau Twins handy, and so I was finishing my food just as the last track of Heaven or Las Vegas was playing. ❤️

the adventures of Joel, budding jazz aficionado:

me: "ha ha, I guess they couldn't come up with an actual title here. 'Mingus... ah... um...' ha ha ha"
my wife: "what instrument did Charles Mingus play?"
me: "I dunno. sax?"

if they made this album nowadays, the whole cover would be one giant health warning, because of woke, or something.

now that my stereo is hooked up and my den is functional, I'm digging into some of the CDs I've bought since we left Calgary. Heaven or Las Vegas is such a frickin good album. the best parts of it feel like a tight warm hug.

so I found a copy of @rxgau.bsky.social's 70s record guide. it's not in great shape but it was only $8. didn't realize until I was leafing through it later that it had some unique bookmarks inside: a Patti Smith postcard, an Expos ticket from 1980 and a mystery snapshot of a young woman.

I've been pretty quiet here lately as we've been settling into our new house. I'm turning part of the attic into my den, and here's how it looks so far.

I picked electric orange because I wanted the space to look warm and bright. Mission accomplished, I'd say.

our first concert since we got back to Ontario: Basic (Doug McCombs, Mikel Patrick Avery, Chris Forsyth) playing at Toronto’s Sound Garage on March 22. Wonderful stuff.

(reposting this from last weekend because I got the names mixed up)
