Progress has also been greatest in R&M occupations compared to managerial though not enough to close the gap

Progress is not equal though. Biggest drops among the youngest - boding well for the success of the smokefree generation policy:

New official Gov data on smoking out this morning for 2024. It's good news - smoking rates continue to fall. Vaping is now more common than smoking, likely part of the reason for the continue drops.

Starting the week with a bang. Delighted the Tobacco and Vapes Bill back in Parliament today and great to be talking about why it’s so important

Fewer young Europeans are drinking alcohol in part due to health concerns but the CEO of Diagio isn't buying it. Definitely not that people feel better when they don't consume your product... www.reuters.com/business/eur...

Stumbled across a map of tobacco retail licence distribution in England in 1634 (for those wondering, the distribution in 21stC would be a blank map as no licence is needed to sell tobacco until government passes Tobacco and Vapes Bill)

Stop smoking services have helped tackle inequality, generally breaking the ‘inverse care law’ – whereby health services are more likely to reach advantaged parts of the population than disadvantaged – and they also see similar levels of success across different groups in the population.
July 24, 2025 at 11:13 AM
Services help people from all walks of life and of all ages but are more likely to see people in middle age.

Interestingly, quit success increases with age- proof that it’s never too late to stop.

One big change since the pandemic? The rise of remote support.

It’s cost-effective, fits more easily into people’s lives, and delivers similar success rates to face-to-face support.
July 24, 2025 at 11:13 AM
There are lots of different ways to quit with services. Most do it with some kind of medication or nicotine vapes – and those people are most likely to succeed

Imperial profits up though volumes fall. House always seems to win when you're the tobacco industry. Stopping the immense profitability of this 'industry' should be a government priority: www.thetimes.com/business-mon...

Yesterday I spoke at the launch of a book by www.booksbeyondwords.co.uk to help people with learning disability to quit smoking. Fascinating to see how it was co-produced and the need for it. NHS, social care and pubic health services are all failing this population when it comes to smoking.

Last night I spoke at the @ashorguk.bsky.social AGM and gave my first Chief Executive speech. We said goodbye to Deborah Arnott after 21 incredible years at the helm. Few people can claim to have had as much impact on a nation's health than Deborah.

The leading causes of preventable death are driven by commercial interests. Industry influence on policy is often unchecked. Our report with @oha-updates.bsky.social and AHA shows common arguments made to oppose regulations: www.ash.org.uk/resources/view/killer-tactics and we made a bingo card too
