part of me really loves that the thing that prevents superheroes from having a definitive canon of stories — decades of different authors, rampant retconning, competing visions for characters, etc — is as old as Greek mythology
Hero or god Heracles's role as a culture hero, whose death could be a subject of mythic telling (see below), was accepted into the Olympian Pantheon during Classical times. This created an awkwardness in the encounter with Odysseus in the episode of Odyssey XI, called the Nekuia, where Odysseus encounters Heracles in Hades: And next I caught a glimpse of powerful Heracles— His ghost I mean: the man himself delights in the grand feasts of the deathless gods on high ... It's too easy to think of famine as a force of nature, an act of God, something unbidden and unstoppable. But as European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell told a meeting of European foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday, "This famine it is not a natural disaster, it is not a flood, it is not an earthquake; it is entirely man-made. By whom? Let's dare to say it: by whom?" He then answered his question: "By the one that prevents humanitarian support [from] entering into Gaza; by the lack of access; by the acute insecurity inside Gaza." In other words, by Israel, which has been waging war against Hamas after the group's brutal Oct. 7 attacks, which left over 1,000 Israelis dead. The imminent famine is the obvious result of a range of policies that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is carrying out to deprive the Palestinian people of resources that might also benefit Hamas, no matter how many children are malnourished in the process. Gaza isn't alone. Every modern famine since the dawn of the Industrial Age - whether it's an act of subjugation against an obstinate population in an empire, an act of cruel indifference from a colonizer toward its colony, or the result of the decision to forge swords instead of plowshares in an untilled land soaked with blood - is a policy choice. It is irrefutable that the acute hunger that the Ministry of Health in Gaza says has killed at least 30 Palestinians, mostly children, since Oct. 7, is the result of choices that the Israeli government has made.

Taken together, these revisions provide a window into how Trump’s deportation machine will operate when it is finally fully up to speed. The steady inflow of migrants to detention centers and their speedy exfiltration to random countries is poised to escalate into a near automated process, with no oversight or chance for the banished to appeal their fate. In stripping these supposed undesirables of their rights to due process, their freedom while awaiting a hearing, and the protections the law should provide them, the administration is robbing them of their very humanity. How much longer then will it take for even this streamlined process, devoid of any chance of appeal or semblance of mercy to be considered too time-consuming or expensive? What then will be the fate of the people stuffed into these camps with no hope of release? The answer may be one that we swore as a civilization never to allow happen again.

Wow. Official ranked choice vote results are out and Mamdani officially clinched the nomination in round THREE. Based on him nearly doubling the number of votes transferred, it looks like the "Don't Rank Cuomo" campaign really did its job

I think this part is also key when talking about Mamdani’s appeal: voters like his policies, not just his vibe. Separating his progressive plans from his charisma could have easily fallen flat
Some of that convincing included targeting some Trump voters. Malik Zindani, 30, who lives in Morris Park in the Bronx and came to the United States from Yemen when he was 15, said he voted for Mr. Trump in November and Mr. Mamdani in the primary. A worker at Qahwah House in Astoria in Queens, Mr. Zindani said that Mr. Mamdani "understands the pain" of New Yorkers. "The policies, the way he presented himself, that's what convinced me," he said. "He showed how much he cares about New Yorkers."

Some people WIRED spoke with at USDS view Amy Gleason, a former USDS official who served in the first Trump administration, as a liaison between legacy USDS, DOGE, and other agencies, but little is known about her official role. Steve Davis, a longtime Musk associate and the president of the Boring Company, is another name rumored to be formally leading DOGE. Davis has worked with Musk for years, and led the billionaire's cost-cutting efforts when taking over Twitter, now X, in 2022. Davis went as far as sleeping in the Twitter HQ. with his wife, Nicole Hollander, and their child. (Hollander is now a high-level General Services Administration official.)
