Jules / Korean-American / any pronouns (tme) / I like languages, comics, kinks, video games I'm too smart for and books I'm too dumb for / almost all Tumblr reposts / 18+ only.
My mom married into a very American household which rocks as far as financial stability goes but in exchange every year we have to pretend to give a fuck about Thanksgiving which is a huge downside.

We took the amtrak to my mom's place last night and I took an allergy pill that knocked me out for like, 12 hours. Woke up covered in dry drool, disoriented and unable to remember where I was and how I got there

Finished Laurie L. Patton's translation of The Bhagavad Gita. I can't really opine on its religious ideas, cultural impact, or even literary qualities, due to being an ignoramus

Had lunch at Russian Teatime and then went to the downtown Christkindlmarkt! Tea was great, they had a darjeeling-black currant house blend that tasted so good before I knew it I'd downed like, 4 glasses. Am also a perma-sucker for scones and clotted cream/jam.

Finished Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov, tr. David Magarshack. I began the novel hating Oblomov, then I reached a quiet understanding and sympathy with his struggles. Then I hated that motherfucker again and wanted to jump into the book and strangle him before he could die peacefully in his sleep.

Had a lovely time at the Field Museum!! My favorite museum, I used to go like, multiple times a month back in undergrad. Was excited to check out the African fashion exhibit! Was really cool, though I was sad the rest of that wing was closed for renovations.

We're doing karaoke but I can't unleash my full power because I have a massive shit brewing inside my tummy rn. Thwarted. Christ suffered less than this

Ran into my old old Mandarin teacher. Wanted to say, "好久不见," forgot the phrase entirely. Mouth already open, too late to back down, gotta speak, four character phrases where one is 不, one is 好.

Frozen, btw? Deeply, deeply incestuous at its core. Nightmarish. Freudian. Not even merely between the sisters. The observed and the observer. The movie and the audience itself. Hideous. Twisted. A fundamentally fascist film
November 23, 2025 at 3:13 AM
I remember that brief period where EVERYBODYYYY on Tumblr was beefing HARD with Frozen. The movie. Like even before it came out people were like, "THIS SHOULDN'T EXIST."

Got annoyed at the dispensary because I'm in line and people were taking their time browsing and I was like "Omfg just sort from THC high to low and just select until you hit the legal maximum f-- oh my god I have a Problem"

I know a non-zero amount of right-wing gay people who are in straight, non-lavender marriages and are unhappy and every time I'm like. Hey sorry you're unhappy. I'm also not sure what you were expecting. Like yeah. That's what happens

We had too much deep dish pizza and now the entire day is a wash. We're done for today. Nothing left but to wait for tomorrow. Am I crazy for thinking our hotel wallpaper is crazy yonic

The CTA has seen many improvements, which is a net good for the city, but somehow makes me sad. Returning someplace and seeing it changed, even for the better, I think breeds a small level of melancholy.

Partner asked me why people are scared to take the CTA and I said, firmly, cowardice

Back in Chicago! Felt surprisingly emotional seeing the Lake. Partner did not have a panic attack on the flight. Minor celebrity who apparently played a dad on a Disney Channel show was on the flight with us but I didn't really grow up with that so I mostly focused on my book.

Finished Grandmothers, Our Grandmothers: Remembering the "Comfort Women" of World War II by Han Seong-won, translated by Soo Kyung Lee.

Oh my fucking god I only just learned that the humuhumunukunukuapua'a is the same fucking thing as a triggerfish. I mean it's a specific TYPE of triggerfish but holy shit I never linked the two.

My little brother said he had a classmate who was relieved Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris lost the presidency bc she's apparently been dead set on being the first female president of the US since like, middle school.

To the average American, every nation in the world can be split into one of the following categories:

- Useful for food
- Useful for pop culture
- Useful for slaves I mean cheap labor
- Categorically Evil
- Vacation spot
- Vacation spot (sex tourism)
- Who??

There are overlaps of course

For the last fucking time. SATIVA grows from the CEILING because they both start with an S sound. INDICA grows from the GROUND because you put the weed in-da-car and drive on the GROUND.

I read Wicked the novel before I ever saw/listened to the musical so it's very funny seeing the musical fans read the book and go "what the fuck." How do you think I felt watching a 3 hour musical and going "Man AND they have to deal with the orgies later"
November 20, 2025 at 11:38 PM
For many reasons (my own ethnicity, the suspicious ease and glee with which non-Black people are happy to mock Black movements, even ones other Black people poke fun at, etc) I do not like using the word myself. But "Yakubian" as a descriptor is so fucking funny to me it tickles me any time I see it
November 20, 2025 at 12:41 PM
I checked out a copy of Paradise Lost (I've never read it) and like magic on my way back to the office a guy in a trenchcoat and the roundest glasses I've ever seen gave me a nod and went "Nice"
November 19, 2025 at 5:07 PM
Apparently Tuttle's coming out with a 3-volume English translation of Musashi, which is annoying bc I still haven't read the single volume translation Kodansha re-printed like, this year >:/

We've entered the dreaded part of my Cantonese classes where the teacher is like "You kinda have to FEEL it. Doesn't X feel more natural than Y? Let's try it. X. Y. X. Y. See? You can kind of intuit it, right?" While all of us are like. No 😭😭😭
