i will never forget taking my zippered ragtop miata into a carwash, back when i was ignorant

way fewer, after 6 years driving two different EVs
far fewer moving parts

it gets reported online. it definitely happened.
and yes it is likely from high pressure water getting sprayed in a way that let it reach the control modules, as i said

yeah, nothing is perfect.
another concern is fossil fuel making hurricanes more common and much worse, but hey ymmv

i assume it's there somewhere?

I have not talked to the dealership yet. TBC, the water did not get to the battery, but to some ill-placed low-voltage sensor or controller module. It might not have happened, had I used carwash mode.

this was at my favorite place, a woman-owned car wash that goes a great job by hand. they were sweet and concerned, but I told them it was not their fault.

in total mea culpa fairness, there is probably a "car wash mode" on the Kia, and I did not activate that. this has never been a problem before, over the course of a dozen car washes.

I think it's very uncommon, but it SUCKS.

EVs are still great, and have fewer problems, but they take adjustment because the entire operation and the ways it can go wrong are novel, vs all our experience with fossil fuel cars.

that battery normally recharges during driving, but if it's "stuck on" (can't go to sleep) because of moisture, the parasitic draw exceeds the charging. it then has to be recharged by roadside assistance, or even replaced (if older or damaged).
November 23, 2025 at 5:30 PM
obviously, EVs have a main battery to power the car, but they also have a smaller battery to boot up the control systems when starting the car, power the unlocking, parking sensors, etc. and the high pressure water can get into the connectors for those low-voltage modules.

since people are asking, here is my limited understanding: car washes use high pressure sprayers that sometimes get up under the car and reach some sensitive contacts, causing a partial short.
November 23, 2025 at 5:30 PM
that has never happened to me, across a couple of different EVs. but car washes sometimes use high pressure sprayers that get up under, into the wrong spot

i went into home depot the other day and saw a fridge with a giant screen built into almost the entire surface of the fridge door, playing ads and screensavers. honestly, it was captivating in a horrifying way. i hated it instantly. all this tech, for selling things, just makes the world worse.
