Climate dad, Canadian energy policy nerd. I post about energy technologies and how we can use them to stop climate change. Views my own. #energysky
Please don't do this to your #heatpump...

Counterpoint: Techno-optimism alone will fix climate change 😂

Absurdity of both points aside, I think it's important to recognize the very high cost of non-technology solutions that are referenced by this statement.

While reducing consumption can help, we can't pretend it's free or painless.

Great post on LinkedIn from @shreyassudhakar.com

Anyone thinking through how to lower the cost of heat pumps needs to keep the business model in mind.

This is not an equipment cost problem, and opportunities to leverage this structure like midstream programs exist.

They are, exporting nearly all of it actually. I'd say the planned battery capacity is the better solution.

Drove through rural southwestern Ontario this morning. Drove by this wind farm with all the blades turned into the wind so they're motionless, despite all the surrounding ones going full tilt.

Sure enough, IESO grid is overloaded with wind, cool to see curtailment in practice.

Your regularly scheduled reminder that the idea DAC is impractical because we need the renewable energy is false. We can just use natural gas. 🔌💡

I don't at all disagree with this. But I wouldn't underestimate the importance of these sectors for decarb.

We're talking about much more than 2%.

AWESOME piece from @chrisbataille.bsky.social @noahqkaufman.bsky.social

I think the piece nails the issues, but I think eschewing energy-economy models is the wrong approach.

So many solutions are intersectoral, we need to ensure their internal consistency with net-zero.

Really gotta model at the continent level. Net zero America remains a decent benchmark here. Nuclear value is quite sensitive to its installed costs but you'd want to play with more variables to under better.

It's totally fair to disagree with this point, some good discussions and points followed from the post.

This is just an effort to use Bluesky's blocking approach to suppress ideas you don't agree with, even if we're totally aligned on the seriousness of climate as an issue.

Let's do a quick thread about why HPWH are a really important DR opportunity.

Boiling it down to average load is incredibly simplistic.

Wanting to clarify these points... @ketanjoshi.co @sevier.io

Everyone acknowledges tension b/w growth and climate goals, but it's not as simplistic as "it's good".

On tech, politics is inherent to arguments for CDR/CCS/demand growth. We just disagree on strategy sometimes.

You didn't read carefully enough, that's simply not true.

Last month I ran my hybrid heat pump system without using gas backup through a historic cold snap. My incremental peak load was only 3kW.

Flukes happen, so was very pleased to hit design day temps around 1am last night and continuing to hold this morning with at -17/18C, or ~0F.

Ugh...gonna have to start sending in my own meter reading every month... nat gas billing systems were not designed for hybrid heating.

Mostly water heating, but you can see that last feb and march i used a bit to heat in hybrid mode. This Jan ran 100% electric so water heating only.

I would highlight, and did in a DM to @roycerk2.bsky.social, that this is a specific and isolated case. Ontario's grid continues to have large amount of wind and the article gives a mistaken impression of this case being the "destruction of wind". They are now planned to procure more.

On Bluesky, people block you when they disagree with you, mostly once they've lost the argument.

Hilariously this guy dismissed my opinion based on a typo inadvertently pluralizing "hydrogen" 🤣
