While some games might benefit from this structure, I think that putting character choices like cool outfits behind in-narrative paywalls unnecessary and cumbersome. Even better items with mechanical benefits are more interestingly gotten otherwise, imo. Basically I agree with you lol.

I think it’s because a lot of players see shopping as character advancement and development and a lot of games encourage that thinking.
