Here's a fire map - the area to the east of the 805 freeway (center) is comprised of mostly new houses. The area has tens of thousands of people... so the potential for disaster was definitely there. The line at the bottom is the US-Mexico border

This was taken late yesterday as the fire started to spread. As you can see, it was not a trivial fire. And it was nearing an area with hundreds of new homes.

This photo was taken near the Olympic training center. The lake in the foreground is where athletes train (rowing). Helicopter pilots used the lake to refill their water dumping containers.
