#32 Piss in the Wind - Joji

coming out of my small break with an album i expected to be pretty underwhelming. joji to me is the genius that gave up; he has real chops as a singer, songwriter, and producer, but he hasn't been able to make a *truly* compelling full project yet. this is no exception.

#31 Chocolate and Cheese - Ween (1994)

ending off january w/ my first dive into Ween, a band known for being both weird and amazing. people seem to agree c&c is the best starting point so i spun it and... was not expecting the genuinely affecting moments here between the shitposts, truly remarkable

#30 Alfredo 2 - Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist

definitely started clicking more for me at certain parts despite being pretty much the same quality as the first. might be because i started paying more attention to the lyrics. jesus christ that akademics line is so funny

#29 Alfredo - Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist

this is basically my first real exposure to gibbs and his craft. pretty enjoyable, i fw the energy. can't remember much of it tho (except for the last sample being "this... is not meth")

#28 4k god projected on the smoldering ashes - death's dynamic shroud

"as you can see," keith rankin has mastered his craft in twisting samples into explosions of sound and emotion, making one of the most unique and affecting dds releases to date. in other words, wow i felt like i was ascending

#27 hexed! - aya

fierce, biting, unconventional. the world of electronic expression has another one to watch for hailing from manchester, england, a mononymous force of nature with hyper-modern lyrics and ruinous aggression on par with some of the best death industrial artists. biiiig rec here

#26 Deseo, Carne y Voluntad - Candelabro

chilean bcnr-core? count me in, this shit is BEAUTIFUL. impeccable atmosphere, tangible yet ethereal performances, and real passion to boot
January 29, 2026 at 6:36 AM
@nytimes.com your ai is making shit up now

#25 Cave World - Viagra Boys (2021)

"they're killing each other out here man... they're killing each other out here"

strikes a lot of the same chords for me as IDLES but also Pup, very ruff and tuff flatly-mixed woke-punk with a lot more doomer-ist aesthetics and it reaaally works for me
January 26, 2026 at 4:52 PM
#24 Something Beautiful - Miley Cyrus

i gotta be honest, im kinda stunned by this one? i knew she had good taste and was always one of the most interesting pop artists ever, but this is channeling parts of the 70s & 80s that have never been done this much justice before. genuinely a 10/10 bravo

#23 The Passionate Ones - Nourished by Time

i'm gonna cry from how sick this sounds, music that makes me feel like the classiest mf in the world despite that not being the slightest bit relevant to my identity is just... incredible
the performances, the melodies, the production, my GOD im in heaven

#22 Fantasy - DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ

two genuine bangers up ahead including this one
i don't know HOW she's able to take repetitive sample-based dance music and make it worth listening to for HOURS ON END. it takes a special talent to release a 4-hour album and make me feel it's not too long
January 25, 2026 at 12:41 AM
#21 Live Laugh Love - Earl Sweatshirt

been a while since i checked out one of the acclaimed GOATs of odd future fame, there's a lot of good flows and bars and shit on here that makes me think maybe im sleeping on earl and i should relisten to his back catalog
January 22, 2026 at 10:32 PM
#20 Cheat Codes - Black Thought & Danger Mouse

i completely get the hype behind this, but it does about as much for me as, say, that last Nxworries record. undeniably great but not something i would put in MY top 10. i know, hot take given how stacked this is. maybe ill change my mind on relisten

#19 Xiu Mutha Fuckin' Xiu: Vol. 1 - Xiu Xiu

so uhhh this just came out????? listened to it on stream last night and like... yeah these are xiu xiu covers alright
somehow even more unnerving and dramatically fucked up than i expected them to be
that glorilla cover is so much 😭 and yet i love it?????

#18 Autofiction - Far Caspian

a quite calming, bright little slacker/indie thing here. not much to note about it, just felt nice to listen to.

#17 EUSEXUA, EUSEXUA Afterglow - FKA twigs

very confusing rollout but the music given to us in the end is nothing short of tantalizingly brilliant. production choices teeter on the edge between unhinged and smooth, loud echoes of Björk and Kate Bush resonating within its deathly dance-pop chambers.

#16 勇気 (Yuki) - betcover!!

always liked this band's sound to a certain extent, and that consistency continues onto their latest effort. the jazz aspects of their jazz-rock aesthetic feel particularly lounge-y this time around, and the range between sparse ballads and mood kayō bops is a fun ride.

#15 reflection - 아버지

had this lil vaporwave project in my backlog for a while, totally forgot about it (and the mv that got removed for copyright) til recently. it's a good, blankety album. i'd say it made an impression on me even if other albums of its ilk hit so much harder.

#14 Deafheaven - Lonely People With Power (2025)

decided to do a double whammy tonight because i've been aching to hear RYM's #2 aoty for a while. yep, holds up to its reputation, both the album and band. god, i can't believe how incredibly easy it is to understand the appeal of blackgaze metal.

#13 Deafheaven - Sunbather [10th Anniversary Remix/Remaster] (2013, 2023)

forget if i even listened to this before but thought i might as well hear what the "cleaned up" mix sounded like. turns out it's blistering, suffocating, and one of the most intimate loudnesses i've ever experienced. love it.
January 15, 2026 at 10:44 AM
#12 The Purpose of the Moon - Lower Definition (2026)

your favorite B-tier post-hardcore band has reunited after over a decade! what's the result? in four words, "they still got it." i won't tell you this is gonna save phc, but it absolutely celebrates a golden, nostalgic time in the scene.

#11 NEVER ENOUGH - Turnstile (2025)

wow. wow wow wow. it's everything you could ever want from a turnstile album. dare i say this might be on par with if not more exciting than GLOW ON with its winding, flowy riffs and vibes and just impeccable production. this band might never disappoint.
