To me the biggest problem with EVs, no matter where they are made, is low residual values. European car makers collect a big chunk of their profits from captive finance. Making EV ownership more attractive will increase demand, improve top line revenues, net profit and save jobs in the whole market.

Nice size! And price. I was also surprised to see Maxis bring more muscle cars to 🇬🇧.

I think Vienna lost its position mainly due to the terror threat and subsequent cancelation of Taylor Swift's concerts but the electric postal service is indeed a nice feature. A lot of Maxus vans and my favourites the small three wheel scooters.

Two Nio in two hours in Frankfurt. Used to be two EVs…

It's 2025 and new EVs in the streets. Spotted the first in Macan in Vienna a few weeks ago. Last week I visited the Porsche store in Mayfair. £104K for this one which makes the Taycan cheap. My neighbours couldn't resist though.

Love that (part of) the Hungarian team in skiing took their Ampera to the Ski Championships in Saalbach.

In fact Saalbach was quite EV dense, maybe reflecting the wealth of the audience...

That's indeed slightly a bit better than what we had anticipated but we also take battery replacements 🪫 🔋into account which brings down the number.

Nice morning walk reminding me that our EOL battery forecasts align really well with reality. Of the Mitsubishi I-Miev that were sold in the UK between 2010 and 2012 are 66% still on the roads while 4% have a Statutory Off Road Notification which sometimes mean they may have left the country.

I think we can expect a much more flat development of the European EV market the next years than what previously has been expected. The incentives, including profitability, are just not there for almost 50% of the market by volume. This will have an impact on investments in the whole value chain.

Maybe the most surprising chart from my article about the European battery recycling market today. In Germany, a market with no credits or subsidies for EVs, BEV/PHEVs had market shares of between 31% and 62% in three segments including SUV in 2024. Nicht schlecht!

Our first webinar in 2025 will cover our latest report about the European Battery Recycling Market. The market will be very chellenging the next 10 years, potentially forever. We focus on how to deal with the market conditions and where the opportunities are.

Orano and XTC forms "Neomat" and reconfirm their plans to establish pCAM and CAM manufacturing in France. Orano also reconfirms its plan to build a recycling facility.

However, between the lines the announcements in fact shows more hesitation in the EU market.

What happens to battery waste volumes available for recycling in Europe if Northvolt fails to reconstructure their business?

Very little. Of the simple fact that:

1. Only small amounts of cells are currently produced
2. NV's orders will be executed by others
3. NV recycles its own waste anyway
