In 2025, Solar Orbiter gave us a first-ever look at the Sun’s south pole.

Remarkably, it found both north and south magnetic fields tangled together.

This is a sign that the Sun is at the peak of its 11-year activity cycle, when its magnetic poles are ready to flip...

Solar Orbiter gets world-first views of the Sun’s poles
Thanks to its newly tilted orbit around the Sun, the European Space Agency-led Solar Orbiter spacecraft is the first to image the Sun’s poles from outside the ecliptic plane. Solar Orbiter’s unique vi...

At the south pole, #SolarOrbiter discovered that the Sun’s magnetic field is currently a mess.

This image from the PHI instrument shows that there are currently different magnetic polarities (north and south) present at the south pole. This happens when the Sun’s magnetic field flips.
