A new study of 1200+ foreign news IG posts in 2022:

All outlets except NYT most often framed foreign news as entertainment. NYT's most common framing was political/social.

Abstract Scholars have long observed that American audiences see fewer stories on major national news platforms that occur beyond U.S. borders, despite the proliferation of 24-hour cable news networks, digital platforms and mobile technology. However, as social media platforms open up more avenues to share and connect with global audiences, do U.S. legacy media organizations offer international news coverage on these channels? Guided by framing theory, this research examines how legacy national news media outlets use their social media platforms as a distribution tool to share and frame newsworthy images. The results suggest that U.S news organizations underutilize their social media platforms as a tool to share newsworthy international news images.

A new paper analyzes 2015-2018 content from 12 Sinclair-owned stations purchased in 2016-2017.

It finds that "once a station is purchased by Sinclair, its volume of climate change reporting drops...and the public becomes less aware climate change is happening."

I think Black Twitter has challenged our widely accepted notions of what journalism is and can be. For me, it’s a space where we began to see the power struggles between journalists and the public in ways we hadn’t before. Certainly we had alternative media, but even with the creation of alternative media outlets, there’s a certain degree of capital of access — both financial capital and social capital that’s necessary for people to publish and to have their stories heard. With Black Twitter, those pre-qualifications built on respectability and identity and racial hierarchy were erased…I think what Black Twitter has done for journalism is really offer a lens of what is possible if we let go of notions that are informed by white supremacy of what is correct.

WILD story: The Everett Leader Herald in MA must shut down this week and pay Mayor Carlo DeMaria $1.1M, per settlement terms of the defamation lawsuit brought on by DeMaria who says the paper knowingly published false info in a conspiracy to oust him from office.

Robbins also cited emails between Philbin and Resnek that boasted of “devastating” and “crushing” the mayor, and of unleashing a “Holocaust” of lies to disparage his career. “This was never a case about a slip of the pen, or about inadvertence, or about a mistake of any kind,” Robbins said. “These were articles conceived for a very purpose — and moreover, for the purpose of taking out somebody who the defendants felt was acting unfavorable to the business interests of the owner of the paper.” DeMaria and his lawyers will hold a news conference in Boston on Monday afternoon to discuss the settlement. Resnek, who writes and edits most of the Leader Herald’s articles, has frequently used the nickname “Kickback Carlo” to refer to DeMaria, a moniker representing Resnek’s claims that DeMaria had received illegal payments in real estate deals.

Local Detroit journalist Samuel Robinson is starting his own publication to cover the city. He was a reporter for Axios Detroit until he was laid off in August.

Solutions frequently involved taking the easy way out in hopes of maximizing engagement. The truth was, other than this sardine mukbang, my cutesy, first-person POV stories were rarely viewed more than the politics stories I covered. Politics is the most engaged and interactive audience for Axios Detroit. I pushed to give people what they were telling me they wanted — original local politics coverage. We quickly learned there isn’t enough time in the day to be a reporter and a daily newsletter author. My former colleagues know this and care to varying degrees. Many don’t since they are seasoned journalists who have had nothing to prove since the 90s. I cared a lot, seeing that I somehow still have to prove myself to skeptical Michigan news leaders.

NEW: A new paper looks at 11 years of climate coverage in 7 major Spanish-language newspapers in the U.S.

The study found that although the stories were published by local news outlets, most were focused on the state, national, or international level.

Scholars have not thoroughly examined ethnic media that serve as a main source of information for minoritized people, such as Latin American immigrants, the primary audience for Spanish-language publications in the United States. This study examines Spanish-language newspaper coverage of climate change in the United States using thematic analysis. Results show that news coverage during2010 and 2013 was very limited, followed by a positive trend between2014 and 2019. Coverage dipped in 2020 and 2021. Results show that the coverage resembles coverage in mainstream English-language media, and does not localize the issue for their audiences, which suggests a significant information gap for millions of immigrants.
