I can confirm it's in our local indie in Penarth
Supposedly also (along with other aberrant spellings like "hed" and "dek") to distinguish instructions about how to set the copy from the actual copy to be set. But I've never encountered any of them in a UK newsroom.

Some of the bilingual presentation on BBC Cymru Wales / HTV in the 70s and 80s is a masterclass, with the announcer switching languages without dropping a beat.
