Closing the lab will lead to more damages due to extreme weather at a time when vulnerability due to as well as the cost of extremes are rising. This makes no sense, and if this decision stands it will become a major problem for the US in years to come

The news that the US government intends to decimate GFDL for ideological reasons is scary. Weather facts are ideology independent. The weather doesn't care about your ideology, your belief system, - or even your existence. "It rains on the just as well as the unjust."

As an investment for the US government GFDL has paid many times over, with increased scientific knowledge and products (weather and climate models) that improve safety of the public and the economy.

4) Professionally this was a very exciting time and an incredible environment to work in. The lab was extremely focused and the science was pursued with an admirable integrity.

3) Others at GFDL were focused on atmospheric models, on climate model development, and there was a group developing the US hurricane model, - to name a few projects. Since I left they also developed the FV3 core which is the basis of the US weather forecasting model (GFS).

2) I worked in the Ocean group using the groups models to pursue questions in oceanography about the large scale structure of the ocean. These questions relate to climate system dynamics and are of relevance for the stability of AMOC, inter-hemispheric linkages and future climate on the planet.
