I think people are just on the defensive by default a lot of the time, but it's strange to me to assume an imminent attack on a 41-year-old movie that AFAIK was never being questioned for Christmas status in the first place

IMO these things bother parents way more than they bother kids, but I knew of parent characters dying (Disney!) and her closing with "and that's how I found out there's no Santa Claus" didn't phase me probably because there are so many Christmas movies where the adults don't believe in him.

The opening has the dad saying he's trying to find a present for Billy, he gives Gizmo as a gift, there are lights everywhere, a Gremlin attacks from a Christmas tree, and it ends on Christmas Day.
