The right short side of this sarcophagus of Protesilaos & Laodameia shows the Tartaros with Sisyphos, punished by externally rolling a stone up the hill, Ixion tied to an eternally spinning wheel, and Tantalos who couldn't drink the water.

The left end of the sarcophagus' front and its sides show scenes from the boy's life: his first bath, his first riding in a chariot pulled by a goat, and school.

The deceased child is wrapped in a shroud on this sarcophagus in the museum of Agrigento. As was the social ideal, the grieving parents sitting at the sides of the bed are composed. Only the nurse and pedagogue are openly showing emotions.

Small-scale portrait of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus, 'Serapis type', made of plaster! Was this how imperial portrait types were transmitted to the provinces?

From the Faiyum in Egypt, now in the Liebieghaus in #Frankfurt.

Of the villa itself, not much is preserved today. The mosaic covered the floor of the central hall and is preserved underneath a protective building.

I love all the little details, also in the geometric frames of the images. For example, the point where tips of the lozenges meet: the different strands of the interlace are arranged like a fan - except in one place! What went wrong there? Or is this perhaps a modern restoration?

Some impressions from the mosaic in the Roman villa at Nennig for #MosaicMonday. It gives a vivid impression of the spectacles in the amphitheater: gladiators, venatores, animal fights, and even musical accompaniment!

On #ReliefWednesday we meet the 3 Parcae who watch over the thread of life:

Nona, on the left, spins the thread from her distaff and spindle.
Decima, on the right, weighs the thread with her pair of scales.
And Morta, in the middle, with her book of fate will cut the thread.

Quite a lot of wild sea life swimming around on this mosaic from the Roman baths of Bad Vibel near Frankfurt!

The inscription PERVINCUS has been interpreted as the mosaicist's signature.

March 11, 2025 at 8:31 PM
