15/ Incidentally, also on August 11th, Ilan Shor posted a video to social media calling for protests in Chisinau, and promising $3000 a month to Moldovans who agreed to attend. (END)

14/ The last couple weeks' sanctions from the U.S. and U.K. are critical: curtailing the growth of this Russian-backed cryptocurrency now, before it gains more liquidity, might just prevent the next wave of mass voter bribery.

13/ On August 11th, PSB launched the ability to trade A7A5 from within their app. This is concerning, as many of the transactions carried out by Ilan Shor's network last year to bribe Moldovan voters occurred on the PSB app. Moldova is, of course, nearing another election next month.

12/ frozen assets back in A7A5, which they could then trade or redeem on the Grinex platform. The origins of A7A5 trace directly to A7, the company owned 51:49 by Ilan Shor and PSB, the Russian State-owned bank. The Kremlin is effectively seeding money into this project. Reasons why in screenshot.

11/ A7A5 is a stablecoin: crypto with a stable value due to being backed up by real-world currency. Think USDC and the US dollar. A7A5 is (shockingly) the first ever stablecoin to use the Russian ruble as its real-world asset. Former Garantex customers were given the equivalent of their [cont-]

8/ It's important to mention Garantex here. Garantex was a hugely successful crypto exchange which, prior to its seizure by law enforcement in March 2025, had been home to over "70% of crypto volumes to and from sanctioned entities and jurisdictions" according to analysis by TRM Labs.
August 22, 2025 at 5:01 PM
7/ That's because, to add to his history of fraud, bribery and disregard for the Moldovan justice system, Shor is now also helping Russia to evade Western sanctions, using a digital token cooked up by his company A7 - the A7A5 token.
August 22, 2025 at 5:01 PM
6/ Last week, the U.S. sanctioned a collection of entities linked to Shor, followed by sanctions from the U.K. earlier this week. On the list were the crypto exchanges Garantex and Grinex, the Kyrgyzstani firm Old Vector, and Shor's company A7 along with its subsidiaries.

5/ These staggering numbers are likely still conservative estimates, as investigators uncovered roughly 1 million bank transfers in exchange for Moldovan votes, carried out through the app of a Russian State-owned bank, Promsvyazbank (PSB).
August 22, 2025 at 5:00 PM
4/ Not content with keeping his fingers out of Moldovan affairs, Shor was accused in October 2024 of mass-bribing Moldovan voters into casting their votes against the pro-EU President Sandu. His network bribed over 130,000 voters with almost $40 million in Russian funds.

3/ In June 2017, he was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison and was placed under house arrest. He proceeded to run away to Israel in 2019 to avoid prison, causing his sentence to be doubled to 15 years in absentia. He now appears to live in Russia with a shiny new Russian citizenship.

2/ Ilan Shor is a Moldovan-Israeli business tycoon who, in 2014, was involved in the largest bank fraud in the small eastern European country's history. He helped steal one BILLION dollars from Moldova's banking system, an eighth of the entire country's GDP at the time.

1/ This week's thread: Ilan Mironovich Shor, the Moldovan-Israeli oligarch, swindler, fugitive, Kremlin shill, and all-round PoS.
August 22, 2025 at 4:58 PM
21/ The claim, that Moldova's 2024 election was won via fraudulent ballots, bore the BBC's logo and was attributed to Bellingcat's founder Eliot Higgins. Neither Higgins nor BBC has anything to do with this story. ChatGPT nevertheless parroted a story from a Russian disinfo actor.
August 14, 2025 at 4:30 PM
19/ A NewsGuard report found that Matryoshka has been publishing 3 fake stories a week about Moldova since April, as opposed to no Moldova-targeted activity before that. Sandu has described it as part of Russia's "unprecedented intervention" into the elections.
August 14, 2025 at 4:30 PM
14/ This Shor-backed Russian disinfo channel was hugely active on TikTok during Moldova's energy crisis (Jan-Feb 2025), garnering over 17M views with videos blaming the West, Sandu or Ukraine for the blackout. The crisis was actually caused by Russia cutting off the gas supply.

8/ Paid Protests.
Ilan Shor, the Moldovan-Israeli tycoon and fugitive, is behind much of the voter bribery. Likewise, he also pays Moldovans to protest the current pro-European government, hoping to disrupt and destabilize the country with fake demonstrations of dissent.

3/ as well as cause a crisis on NATO's eastern border. Lastly, Russia makes use of Moldova's breakaway region of Transnistria to illegally host Russian troops and a massive ammunition depot, which contains 20,000 tons of ammo.

1/ This week's thread: how Russia is attempting to steal the Moldovan election.

On September 28, Moldova will hold its parliamentary election. For such a tiny country, its strategic importance to Russia is huge, and its future will impact not just Ukraine, but all of Europe.
