I have potted up a 5-6 inch fragment of the Ominous Roots. Usually taking root cuttings is fun, but this is like incubating some unknown xenomorph from the Alien franchise. Don’t know what it is, but I do know it is malign and invasive

Plant 🌱 people: do these look like bindweed roots to you?? I'm finding them all over the garden as I do autumn cleanup, at a depth of no more than 2-3 inches, with the pinkish ends often poking up above the soil. They are soft and very fragile, breaking off easily. No obvious bindweed aboveground.

Started harvesting the radishes. (Chinese red meat “Beauty Heart”) They won’t win any awards for size, but they taste pretty good.

The number of people who don't understand the function of quotation marks is genuinely depressing

Yyyyyeah I don't buy that apologia. The Death's Head Hussars wore a pretty generic skull and crossbones. This is a modified version very specific to the Nazis.

Good news, everyone. The second-to-last chapter of THE HUNGER AND THE DUSK has landed in my inbox.

"Wow, who has the stones to publish a headline like this in The Atlantic," I thought to myself. Of course it was @adamserwer.bsky.social

Okay plant 🌱 people: what do you think these are? They've popped up in the last few weeks (ie autumn germination). Some kind of nettle? Catnip? Plant app can't decide. Seattle, climate zone 8B. (Bottom center is hemlock; grass center left is some native fescue I'm attempting to germinate from seed)

Dahlias are starting to curl in this chilly weather, so I decided to bring most of the remaining blooms inside. Garden beginning to wind down for the season, except for a few overwintering vegetables. 🌱

In the only piece of good news, this bog sage—which I had to buy from a mail-order nursery bc it’s so hard to find in garden centers—has doubled in size and put out several new shoots since I planted it a month ago. If it stays happy it will get 7 feet tall and put out blue flowers next year
