Our first-year GWIBS PhD students are coasting to the end of the first semester with us. We enjoyed hearing their excellent presentations describing their first lab rotations today!

The final GWIBS Fall semester defense belongs to Dr. Sveta (Lana) Jagannathan! Lana's project, conducted with Dr. Rohan Fernandes, explored a novel adoptive T cell therapy platform generated using Prussian Blue nanoparticle-based photothermal therapy for the treatment of glioblastoma.

Today we celebrate Dr. Emily Williams, the first PhD graduate of @mahoshibata.bsky.social! Emily defended her dissertation yesterday on TRIM28 and endogenous retroviral element expression in prostate development and disease. She also created our new student orientation peer mentor matching system!

First up in this week's defenses is the newly-minted Dr. Sreejita Arnab! Today Sreejita defended her dissertation, conducted with Dr. John Bethea, exploring a hippocampal TNFR2 that coordinates β-endorphin and CB1 signaling to normalize nociceptive processing and resolve chronic neuropathic pain.

So proud to introduce our latest GWIBS graduate, Dr. Jenna Clements! Jenna, a recipient of both NIH T32 and F31 fellowships, defended her dissertation yesterday describing the relationship between HDAC11 and the RNA splicing factor SF3B2 which she investigated in the lab of Dr. Ed Seto.

Today we congratulate our newest GWIBS alumna, Shatha Salameh from the lab of Dr. Nikki Posnack! Dr. Salameh defended her dissertation on the therapeutic implications of developmental differences in cardiac physiology of children and adults. Her achievements include both AHA & NIH F31 fellowships!

As we reach the end of Orientation 2025, we saw the Washington Nationals sweep the Marlins in a 10-5 victory! Alas, the Presidents Race did not feature a similar victory by our namesake George (who ran in the wrong direction along with Tom), but nonetheless it was a perfect "10" day at the ballpark!

We continued Orientation activities yesterday with a visit to the Capital Area Food Bank, where our GWIBS students, faculty and staff packed over 400 donation boxes to help our DMV neighbors facing food insecurity.
