20 yeas ago I moved from Netherlands to Kenya, with four suitcases, a partner and a baby.

Today I’m moving from U.K. to Crete with two suitcases.

Just about getting this travel light thing.

25 years ago I ran a training course for a US multinational on Crete (they had no connection but just wanted it there 🤷). It was great - nice hotel by the sea, lots of management games etc. At the final dinner, there was a firework display with the name of the firm in fireworks. Completely mad.

First time in Greece, I did this trip. Athens, Nafplio (lovely seaside town near Mycaene, Olympia (where original Olympics were), Delphi (amazing temple), Athens.

Loved it.

I’m going to Crete.

But Athens is a must see. Not in high summer - that’s when lots of Athenians go to the islands to avoid the heat. It’s a stunning city.

I’m not going there.

Well for a long time they were. There was a point when it was 1:1 whey the commentator said Scotland had had one shot on target (and that was the goal) and Denmark had had 17.

If they serve up this level of entertainment I’m all for it.

I’m 63 and going next week. Shivering in an expensive miserable country doesn’t really do it for me.

OK, so I’ve l left before, for six years, back for six years and away again for 12 years but this time only my ashes might come back here.

Why? Sure it’s divided, angry and directionless.

But mainly it cold, dark and expensive.
