When did condottiere become condottiero? I don’t approve of this messing around with declensions.

What’s interesting, by the way, about the picture that Mischa and/or his publisher has chosen for the cover is that it’s one of a number of historical paintings of Huns from about the time of the Boxer Rebellion/Russo-Japanese War/emergence of the Japanese Empire that depict in pretty lurid terms…

1/18 I thought I’d make a thread out of this.
Frankly, we know very little about the appearance of the Huns. When they appear in the west in the 370s we have only *highly* dubious Roman descriptions. Ammianus’ is probably the most famous but it is very clearly a patchwork of Graeco-Roman…

I would bet quite a large sum of money that fifth-century Huns didn’t look very much at all like this. Sorry folks.

In the rather sad process of clearing out my parents’ house and found a heap of old wargaming magazines with articles in by me that my Dad (bless him) had kept. Might these be of interest to anyone?
There’s a full set of British Early Medieval Battles from (practically) the early middle ages…

I don’t know if anyone needs/wants to know this but the singular forms of the plural nouns velites*, equites, and milites are veles, eques and miles.

* In Latin. In French (e.g. vélites de la Garde) it is indeed vélite.

This week’s pedantry is brought to you by me browsing wargames magazines.

After the (non-wargames!) events of the weekend in the UK I have decided to abandon Twitter completely. I don’t want to contribute even infinitesimally to the moon-faced racist’s wealth and standing. Hope to continue conversations here.
