Derryl, you took this photo 23 years ago in Calgary.

May I throw a happy birthday out to older son Sam today? He makes music and loves it (always has, from 3 years old), defends and engages with the environment for work and pleasure, and brings generosity and caring to all he does, and to us.

Yesterday's gig at TIFA. If memory serves (Trevor Campbell's expression is a clue) I was asking why anyone who had actual tickets to Game 7 was even attending our event! (I did promise Susanna Kearsley and I would be done talking and signing in plenty of time for people to get home or to a bar.)

There was a time, not all that long ago, when I really liked Tony Geer, who owns and runs Conversation Tree Press. That was then, now is his having sent me nearly a thousand sheets of his (drop-dead gorgeous) forthcoming special edition of TIGANA to sign. I’ll need lots of good jazz. And pens.

And this, for those who want to put a toe in the water with my work, or to add an ebook to their collection. UNDER HEAVEN is much less than a coffee this week in US, at all the usual-suspect ebook retailers.

Moi? Art photos sometimes? Ummm…

This is in a stylish Viennese Restaurant (including their angled windows) 7 floors up In the Motto Hotel. Patron at their bar.

My splendid translator in France, Mikael Cabon, asked me to support an urgent campaign, launching today, opposing AI being used instead of people. I do so willingly, and feel same on behalf of audiobook readers and bookworld artists. I hope readers worldwide will show their agreement.

Yup.

Always miss her, some days intensely.

Just got a text from a friend in Kyiv, a bookstore spotting. This is their edition of A Brightness Long Ago. I am touched, and honoured, that they are translating and reading my work right now.

This was an encore 4th whisky our host chased down for last night. Got last bottle as it has just won ‘best whisky under 20 years old’ in one of the competitions. It’s delicious, pretty much all of us really liked it. Very good value for an award-winning 18 year old if you can find.

For me this was the (generous) prize of last night’s whisky group. 22 year old overproof Caol Ila special release. But it was controversial … a majority found it too ferocious, even with a bit of water. Bourbon cask, peaty, with sweetness revealed. Really distinctive.

This is lovely. My congratulations to all nominees, all categories, and my thanks, always, to Mikael Cabon, who translates my work in France, and who did so far All The Seas of the World.

Then they did this, for the paperback reissue.

My parents, bless them both, were married in Winnipeg on this day in 1953. Both had returned from ‘away’…my dad doing his surgery residency in Scotland, staying overseas after the war, my mom at the U of Cincinnati. Fixed up on a blind date that worked.

Amid the wider chaos, this has been unveiled, and is deeply pleasing. We made a donation to U of Manitoba in honour of my mom, who went back to school after we grew up, got her BFA Honours in Painting, cum laude, having made art (and continuing to, into her 90s) all her life.

Sunday. Montreal. Joie de Livres is a bookstore/bar/cafe and how shall you resist? Books in English and French.

Paparazzi sneaked up and got photos of the wild celebrations honouring Edward Hopper’s being born on this day. No privacy any more!

TIGANA is having quite the 35th birthday. Here’s the dramatic cover of the edition in Taiwan.

Seems my Canadian editor, Lara Hinchberger (who knows her limericks), has picked a winner for the Great GGK Limerick Contest. Winner gets the entire Penguin backlist AND Written on the Dark. Decent prize. Who says poets are never honoured today? Congratulations, Bob.

Rembrandt was born on this day, deeply worthy of celebration. He did so many great works, but will always be just about synonymous with self-portraiture, for me.

Doorbell just rang and this has arrived. The new TIGANA in Canada. Lisa Jager’s gorgeous cover. The book is just beautiful.

35 years. Very hard to believe.
