Great you want to take the kids to the zoo did you prepare the sunblock to reapply, the bottled water (closed containers, thermos aren’t allowed), the snacks that don’t make them sick, a change of clothes when Jim falls into the stingray tank, jackets for evening? Or did I have to plan that for you?

“NO you cannot go to the concert because you hit your brother and your actions have consequences. NO you cannot go on the school trip we can’t afford it. NO you cannot play video games all day even thought it’s fun because you have other shit to do.” The person who makes the not-fun calls.

It’s easy, fun, and fulfilling to be the YES guy. But the YES guy is not a parent. The person who does the budgets, makes sure dinner is not complete shit AND that it’s eaten, plans how they’re going to bring along 4 coats and 6 water bottles and where they are going to stop for bathroom breaks, is.

Getting ready for bed when no one wants to take a bath. Saying YES you have do homework and go to school because you don’t want to be held back a grade without your friends…

-Forcing a toddler to learn to brush their teeth. The two hour shitshow just to get everyone prepared to leave the house. Packing snacks because they’re going to get hungry, being prepared with water because they’re going to get thirsty, complaining that it’s the wrong snacks in the wrong water

Pisses me off too, like abandoning your kids is an exciting plot point and set the stage for a story and characterization, and leads to an intriguing plot- but certainly it’s not something to celebrate or that reflects well on a person…

Did he love being a dad? Or was he a feckless and selfish waster who deliberately ignored the instructions of the parent who was responsible for us 99% of the time, including the not-fun stuff like making sure we ate right, got enough sleep and did our homework?

This is a thread about Stede Bonnet.

When my siblings and I would visit, he was great fun. Let us stay up all hours, took us to theme parks, fed us junk, let us watch horror movies that were rated WAY too old. Then sent us back to mum for another twelve months or so.

When home we'd have trouble sleeping, nightmares, upset stomachs.

The rolls went in the oven and were the best part of the meal honestly. But when the pumpkin is supposed to get added to the dough is still a mystery to this day.

The fact that Gramma used to call everything—every single dish at Thanksgiving—“luscious,” while saying nothing about any other dishes any time of year. Everyone knew it was coming!!

My grandmother used to add a spoonful of sugar to the peas. No one else did.

The first year she hosted but not cooked, the oldest added a spoonful of sugar “for granny.” So did the youngest. And middle. And their partners. And the grandchilden. AND GRANNY.

27 spoonfuls of sugar.
Candied peas.
