Absolutely, he was viewed until recently as a terrorist who did it "the bad way". Contemporary accounts were very negative. Today, I'd say we have reached the conclusion that he was justified and right, but I'd hesitate to say "he should have succeeded" because the knock on effects are incalculable

It was pretty standard to cast him as a crazy outsider with no hope of success and thus was somewhat ridiculed. That's obviously a very Southern centric view of it, which would also qualify for reassessing. We're talking about the written history and how we interpret the events. Less like the news.
