I think (despite how much I love the setting, particularly the one they burned to the ground) that it was a mistake to give it to Americans. We lack the faculty or quirk of finding humor in misery that Brits have, so we have to take things either more lightly or more sincerely.

My tolerance for "twee" is really low, so I think I rate Anderson less than he deserves, most likely.

Directors that make films that *look* and *feel* like a mechanism don't reach me. The Coen Brothers are notoriously fastidious directors (The Dude's every "Uhm.." and "uh..." was scripted) but they don't make clockwork movies.
Nolan, Kubrick, and (to me) Wes Anderson *only* make clockwork movies.
