So many people. So hard to move

Coming home, we drove past the hellscape of the Inglewood oil fields. They are still pumping oil and gas in 2025. There are still no bike lanes that allow you to cross here. Just lanes of freeway speed traffic, inducing demand for oil, which has to be produced to feed cars. A bad Circular economy

Most restaurants offer 6-8 ban chan dishes. Soban is famous for giving 12-20 (all prepared there)

The proprietor grew the jujubes in her yard. The stew has a smoky and sweet depth that tastes like love and a long prep time

We had the signature rib stew with purple rice, seafood tofu pancakes and ban chan.

I'm not kidding about the Oscar celebrations
November 23, 2025 at 11:03 PM
The late Jonathan Gold introduced this little gem of a family run restaurant to LA & the world. Michellin followed. Now it's the place to celebrate after winning an Oscar.
Gold used to bring his family & friends to eat here a lot.
Artwork honoring him & the hole he left grace the wall

We were so close to Soban, we had to go www.sobanla.com/about

We drove to south of LACMA and biked to the start. When we took the detour around Paramount studios, we stopped to give directions to a tattooed couple from England. It would have been a schlepp on Santa Monica Blvd, but only minutes by Metro 4 bus (which we recommended)
November 23, 2025 at 10:48 PM
We lost count of how many tattoo parlors line Melrose, but we saw only one tattoo removal clinic
November 23, 2025 at 9:59 PM
Melrose was so packed, we went off the course at Paramount Studios on our return direction. These two Muffler Men say hi. This is an art form practiced throughout Latin America & SoCal

It's the only day that it's safe to bike across the 101 freeway on/off ramps. Normally, this area is jammed with cars not paying attention to pedestrians and cyclists. Crosswalks are not respected or observed here, which is why so many people die near freeway ramps

Today's event was sponsored by Netflix Stranger Things: One Last Ride.
It almost was the last ride as major event sponsor, Metro (transit agency) almost zeroed out CicLAvia budget to make up for freeway widening shortfall (CA 91/I-605). Thankfully, didn't pass.

It's #Ciclavia on Melrose today.

North and South Redondo Beach are connected by an isthmus at a steep hill. When RB built a Class 1 bike path to avoid part of the climb, it induced 500-600 bike trips daily, mostly school kids.
Before, parents drove kids S to school & then N again to home/work. Each bike trip evaporated 2 car trips

LWVC had advocated for single payer in California for more than a decade. Now, more than ever, we should push for what is right.

Another 1.25+" Thursday afternoon to Friday morning. The weeds are loving it
November 21, 2025 at 5:57 PM
Homes on one side of the freeway, jobs and university on the other side. Cul de sacs galore due to freeway dead ends. Everyone has to travel along 190th St. Bikes are not just recreation. People who work here can't afford cars+rent. Transit doesn't run 24/7 like these warehouse and bakery jobs

Another 0.18" by Sunday evening.

So scooters ruin her view but the parked cars lining both sides of the street don't?
The scooters are somehow to blame for the broken glass of a car crash?

You can buy a yarn and pattern kit to make your own emotional support chicken from The Knitting Tree. It's a short walk from Metro LA's Westchester K line station. It's one stop north of LAX and worth a stop

Do you see the sludge in the buckets? That's stuff that was deposited with the rain or washed off the roof with a few grains of composite roof material. Mostly air pollution. During the 9-10 month dry season in SoCal, the black stuff builds up on leaves. We give our trees & shrubs occasional showers
November 16, 2025 at 12:17 AM
I mean, I don't waste fresh rainwater on gravel. I haul it to shrubs and trees to deeply water them (encourage deep roots), get some cardio and strength training
November 15, 2025 at 11:53 PM
There's a whole row of them on the side of the house. I moved up the laundry schedule to avoid the rain. (Clothesline hung from fence)
The gravel is permeable, but we get hard water from taps, which can build up Ca carbonate on the roots. Flushing with freshwater removes deposit buildup on roots
