Scientist. Grumpy. Per aspera ad astra.

I am just going to start posting our 3D prints and call it self-care.

Here I present my latest piece “Arriving to the afterlife”
"I'm walking down the street mindin' my own affair
When two policemen grabbed me and I'm unaware
They said "Is your name Alexander?" and I said "Why, sure"
They said "You're the cat that we've been looking for"

But I was framed
I was framed
I never did nothing
But now I was, I was framed"

Yet another unique way to stimulate cellular immunity against cancer.

“Using the gut immune system to induce cellular immunity is a unique approach,” Shirakawa notes. “And it should be very easy to extend it to other antigen proteins and also infectious diseases.”

Inducing immunity against cancer via the gut
Could a microbe that can smuggle antigens into the immune system of the gut provide a simple way to treat cancers?

Me, a biomedical researcher (MD, PhD who does no MD’ing and all PhD’ing) answering questions from my family.
First day as a doctor:

Okay, the X-ray shows your bones are all still there, so you’re probably fine.

Got reviewer comments of a manuscript submission back. One of the reviewers’ feedback was that I used the phrase “in review” too much.

Dear readers, that’s the watermark publishers add to each page of a manuscript that is, well, IN REVIEW. Also asked to remove line numbers for readability…

The entire post is beyond stupid, divorced from facts, and a parody of "the immigrant stole your cookie"-ism," but I want to call out "groceries cost too much" as one particular stupidity.

Over 40% of farmworkers picking crops are undocumented! Deport them and prices go UP!
this defies parody. also helps explain why Sec Bessent bizarrely blamed immigrants when confronted with a question about high beef prices

I was today years old when I found out that a group of ladybugs is called a “loveliness” and I absolutely needed this knowledge, considering all what is happening. ❤️🐞🐞🐞🐞

Microscopic life is fascinating.
Cellular structure self-organizes through an interplay between internal mechanisms and external cues. The single-celled suctorian P. collini builds a trap structure to capture large prey using microtubule feeding tentacles, creating feedback between cell morphology and prey availability.

This is from the Kenner, LA Police Chief. Note the language: he didn’t say “undocumented” or “Illegals”, he said “Hispanics” and immediately linked it to gang activity.

This is what people voted for. The brutal and lawless raids and detentions are the reason people still approve his job.

Treating the claim of “Illegal immigrant cows” with seriousness in this headline and sub text is exhibit 2838584 of why @nytimes.com has become a joke.
Those sick, undocumented, immigrant cows get the NYT treatment.

Prashant Singh in the lab of Tina Iverson at Vanderbilt published this image of the bacterial 🦠flagellar motor, a detailed molecular model made possibly by CryoEM 🔬.

The similarity to mechanical motors are strong enough we can use terms like stator, rotor, rod & gearing to describe it.

Immigration status is irrelevant to them. No Hispanic person, regardless of status/citizenship is safe. This is what people voted for.
This is ✨exactly✨ how I imagined Project 2025 playing out, when I was warning people about it months and months before Election 2024.

They despise Black and Brown people and want us out of “their” country—our citizenship status is just pretext; it isn’t actually relevant. #ICE

US citizen Maria Greeley, a Latina who was adopted, was walking home from work downtown when masked agents zip tied her. They said she “doesn’t look like a Greeley.” This is how the government treats people under current deportation policies.
