Interested in trends in the makeup of the US Catholic population?

20% of U.S. adults are Catholic, a figure that's been stable for years.

A growing share are Latinos, and upwards of 4-in-10 Catholics are immigrants or the children of immigrants.

Our recent post includes our latest info on the size of the U.S. Catholic population and data about their demographics, beliefs and practices.

One interesting finding - more than four-in-ten U.S. Catholics are immigrants (29%) or the children of immigrants (14%).

In the new Religious Landscape Study, women are more religious than men, on average. But the gender gap shows signs of narrowing. It's a bit smaller now than before, and it's smaller among young adults than among older people.

A lot of it is partisanship, but some religious differences remain even after controlling for partisanship and other factors.

In big 2022 @pewresearch.org survey about religion & environment, we found most highly religious people believe the Earth is sacred and God gave humans responsibility of caring for it.

But most don't think climate change is very serious problem.

It's admittedly a bit dated, but we did a survey in 2015 that asked Catholics whether the Church should or should not recognize the marriages of same sex couples. 46% said yes, 46% no, 8% no opinion. pewrsr.ch/1ieOVsn

In our 2022 survey re: religion & environment, 43% of US Catholics said it's extremely/very likely that in next 30 years, environmental regulations will cause loss of individual freedoms

And 39% said US will overreact to climate change w/unnecessary regulations

Next week, Pope Francis is expected to provide update of Laudato Si.

In 2022, @pewresearch.org surveyed more than 10K U.S. adults (incl. 2K Catholics) about religion and views of environment.

Lots of key findings, like this re: what's said in congregations.

Just last year, 57% of U.S. Catholics said global climate change is an extremely serious or very serious problem.

Among Catholic Democrats, it was 82%.

Among Catholic Republicans, it was 25%.

Like the public overall, Catholics are deeply divided along party lines in their views re: climate change.

For example, 70% of Catholic Democrats say the Earth is getting warmer because of human activity. Among Catholic Republicans, 18% say this.
