People often find the redemption narrative to be so compelling that they jump to the redemption part without demanding any accountability or change in behavior.

Its also the problem of fine tuning--for a nearly missed shot to be EXACTLY the only place that could cause photo op, easily staged WWE-style injury but not seriously hurt him, that's some cosmic coincidence.

This is the one conspiracy theory I have come to believe, after being skeptical at first. There are just too many lines of evidence pointing to it, let alone the political convenience of it all.

I would add to all this that nearly everybody was a veteran of a brutal world war and political street violence between factions was already the norm. So, the bar for the population accepting and engaging in brutal violence was much lower than it is in America today, even with all our guns.

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding pity. It is perfectly consistent to regret that some people are beyond redemption, and then act to remove them from civil society. Pity insulates us from being mirror images of our enemies, it is about our humanity, not their inhumanity.

It is an obscene amount of money. Its similar to the total defense budget of the US during the 1950s (in adjusted $).

It's going to take a lot of major reform, but trust can be regained. Even Germany wasn't a pariah state forever after WWII.

I agree that everyone thinks they are the "good guys", and often warp allegory to align with their politics. But I don't think pop culture teaches that any means are appropriate for the "good guys" winning--the opposite is often true, to the point that its almost a trope to critique this idealism.

I will never understand this. The totality of our popular culture since WWII has rotated around one core concept: fascists are bad, democracies are good. The bad guys in almost every TV show and cartoon we grew up with were fascist/Nazi coded. How could this indoctrination fail??

Agreed. And to everyone saying "its not enough"--you are right, but every step on the way to "enough" is, by definition, not enough. And anything that removes their momentum puts them more firmly on the path to more defeats.

Also, a lot of people who are liberal/progressive own firearms, its just not their entire identity and its not weirdly fetishized and wrapped in conspiracy theory and power fantasies.

I think what changed was that they realized they cannot keep power through democratic means. Since they are incapable of ever conceding defeat, the only recourse is violence, and that means their cult having a total monopoly on firearms.

We have rights. If the government murders people on the street without consequence, they are violating those rights. Rights always exist, the Constitution and rule of law protects them. It falls short doing that in many cases, and people in power abuse and violate them, but they exist all the same.
