Multiple choice questions, Do Now retrieval tasks, or Turn and Talks are great ways to check and activate prior knowledge before reading.

Often, this will be knowledge from previously taught units - key vocabulary like ‘reactants’ and ‘products’ in Science, or concepts like ‘prejudice’ in History.
