Political Buttons from the collection of James Cassidy, via Museum of Connecticut History
This panel of buttons is for U.S. Congressmen and women. The oldest button here is for George Lilley (top left corner). Lilley served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1901-1903 and was elected to Congress in 1903. He served until Jan. 5, 1909 and vacated his seat to be sworn in as Connecticut's 63rd Governor on Jan. 20, 1909. It was an office he held only a short while though, he died April 21, 1909. State-Wide Election buttons Just above the sheriff's pins you'll find a pin for Mary Q. Fahey served in the Connecticut Legislature in 1957 and 1958, being the first female resident of Torrington to do so. She also ran unsuccessfully for Secretary of the State in 1958. State Rep/Congress buttons Among the interesting buttons on this panel is the button for Bill O'Neill, about third row down center (with photo). This button is undated but may be from one of his first two unsuccessful runs for the State House of Representatives in 1960 and 1962, he ran again in 1966 and won, serving in the House from 1967-1978. O'Neill is much better known for his later political career, as the Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut from 1979-1980 and then 84th Governor from 1980-1991. Local Elections Buttons from local races for Mayor and Selectman.
