Our mission is to lead on world-class research, policy, training and innovation that supports effective action on climate change.
Recently, 11 PhD students designed an expedition that promoted and practised an environmentally friendly lifestyle by travelling to the Peak District to explore the region’s quarries and see how nature reclaims industrial landscapes over time.

🧊A landmark case brought by Peruvian farmer Saúl Luciano Lliuya against German energy giant RWE earlier this year has reshaped how courts view climate liability.

It confirmed a vital legal principle: that polluters can be held liable for climate damages.

Dr @etheokritoff.bsky.social said:

“For countries in the global South on the frontlines of its worst impacts, scaling up adaptation finance is fundamentally a matter of climate justice [...] many harmful outcomes can still be avoided if we work to close the persistent adaptation gap.”

Dr @dralaaclimate.bsky.social said:

“While NDCs have improved, ambition falls short of the 60% reduction by 2035 required for 1.5°C.

[...] NDCs aren't voluntary suggestions [...] Setting targets that knowingly fail to align with temperature goals may constitute internationally wrongful conduct.”
November 24, 2025 at 5:11 PM
Professor @joerirogelj.bsky.social said:

"COP30 leaves us between a rock and a hard place […] These NDCs have come in hesitantly, inadequately and unambitiously. They move the needle, but insufficiently to confidently avoid 1.5°C or even 2°C of global warming.”
November 24, 2025 at 5:11 PM
Dr @robinlamboll.bsky.social said on Bsky:

“This COP has been deeply disappointing. It claimed to be a COP of action, but all comments on fossil fuels, and even most comments on deforestation […] have been removed from the final text. Being literally on fire at one point was a fitting metaphor.”

Human-induced climate change made the rainfall and temperature conditions that led to the ongoing drought in Syria, Iraq and Iran more severe, according to new analysis by @wwattribution.bsky.social 🧵

Recognising and financing Indigenous-led fire management is not only a matter of climate justice; it is a precondition to safeguard the Amazon’s future.
November 18, 2025 at 3:12 PM
Indigenous communities have shown remarkable adaptation in the face of rapidly intensifying wildfires, such as the creation of a voluntary local fire brigade to combat this rising threat.

However, they urgently need greater and direct funding for community-led fire prevention.
November 18, 2025 at 3:12 PM
These wildfires have multiple impacts: smoke exposure harming human and animal health, food insecurity, shortages of medicinal plants and timber (used for fishing boats and equipment).
November 18, 2025 at 3:12 PM
In 2024, the Capoto/Jarina Indigenous Territory was among the most severely affected areas of the Brazilian Amazon: wildfires burned over 22% of its land, an area almost equivalent to London.
November 18, 2025 at 3:12 PM
Climate change is reshaping fire regimes: fire seasons are becoming longer and more intense across the globe, especially in the Amazon, writes Michel Valette at @centrewildfires.bsky.social & @ic-cep.bsky.social following two years of fieldwork on indigenous-led fire management in the Amazon.

To be Paris Agreement compatible, the label 'abated fossil fuels' needs to apply to Carbon Capture and Storage applications with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions on a lifecycle basis.

This requires four things...🧵

📈If all climate pledges & policies are delivered, temperatures are projected to rise by 1.9°C over the 21st century.

⚠️Current pledges and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions put the world on a high-risk climate track, towards warming levels of 2.8°C by the end of this century warn @joerirogelj.bsky.social, @robinlamboll.bsky.social & @j-bird.bsky.social.
