I went to the SI of the original paper and it was basically “nitration of ferrocene is reported to not work, but we did it anyway using a procedure for benzene from an o-chem 2 lab manual and it totally worked but you’re just going to have to trust us because we didn’t characterize the product”

The cyclopentadienyl ligands in ferrocene are aromatic (considering the cyclopentadiene anion) and hence can undergo electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions which is characteristic of aromatic compounds mainly benzene [23, 24].
However, nitration of ferrocene has been deemed un-attainable
[24]. Considering the aromaticity character of the ferrocene, the well-known mechanism of nitration of benzene with slight modifications was followed [25]. First, 1ml of sulfuric acid (H,504) and 3ml of nitric acid (HNO;) were mixed and placed in ice bath for 15 minutes, followed by slowly adding 0.8 g of ferrocene to the mixture to produce nitro ferrocene. Then, the nitro ferrocene was transferred to three neck round bottom flask for reduction. In the other side of the flask, 7ml of hydrochloric acid (HCI) was poured and closed by a cork fitted with thermometer. With drop wise release of the nitro ferrocene, the mixture was refluxed for 45 min at 75 °C, then the set up was allowed to cool down at ambient conditions and then disassembled. The product was washed, centrifuged several times, dried and then collected. On Friday, I successfully defended my PhD dissertation! I can’t believe it’s done. As of this moment, I have no idea what comes next.

Maloy had a town hall last month in Grantsville. She got an angry reception out there too, though unfortunately it was a very small venue and they didn’t allow it to be recorded.
