He now sits upon his upholstered throne, awaiting the empty yogurt bowl. I always leave him a little extra for the performance he puts his all into. Since that picture he has pressed in close, his nose two inches from the bowl, purring loudly in anticipatory ecstasy.

What a cat.

He had a brief morning constitutional in the catio to yell at some birds and bunnies, came back in for treats. Stank up the litterbox like the dumpster king he is. Filled back up with some dry kibble.

Junkyard moans in his sleep a lot, this sort of low gutteral whine that isn’t quite a growl. So after I made him this little nook behind my comfy chair, he tucks himself back there and crashes a lot of the day. It sounds like there’s a ghost in my wall

So we closed up the main entrance and turned off the light switch to avoid a fire it damage to the birds. People can use a different door for a couple weeks.

It was a heartwarming thing to encounter on this Tuesday in May, when so many other things are sad and hard.
A door sign that reads: PLEASE USE DOOR ON THE OTHER SIDE! NESTING BIRDS! Below the text is a red stop sign on a black background that also reads Restricted area, do not enter A door sign that reads: Friends! Please use the other gym door for the next couple of weeks! We have two nests of mourning doves with eggs and babies! One is nestled in the light under the overhang above you. We have turned off that light temporarily, although the building lights higher up will remain on. Sometimes you can hear the babies chirping, but the next is hidden behind the plastic case. The other nest is on the ledge to your right. Mama and Papa mourning doves take turns sitting on the nest to keep the eggs warm. Please look from a distance and do not touch. Please do not approach the nests or the birds… …and especially do not touch or disturb the nests or eggs! Birds grow up much faster than humans and these beauties will be out of our doorway in a short time. Mourning doves build very messy, disorganized nests, frequently in places with lots of human traffic. Here are a few pictures so you can see what they look like without disturbing the nest! The sign includes 5 pictures of nesting mourning doves and eggs.

The second nest I spotted because it is firmly ensconced INSIDE the hanging light fixture. Clever, clever birds perhaps discovered that dusk till dawn bulbs are warm at night. I can’t see the birds, but I can hear that the babies have hatched. Cheep cheep cheep.

Today we discovered two bird nests next to our gymnasium door.

One we noticed b/c it belongs to a mourning dove family. They build messy nests, slap together 3 twigs & a piece of lint & then lay eggs. Mama & Papa take turns sitting on the eggs and they are remarkably unperturbed by human activity.
