A controversial Sotheby's auction featured a "Frankenstein" Blancpain Fifty Fathoms watch, raising concerns about authenticity and the brand's misrepresentation of its historical roots.
Sotheby’s New York Goes Full Frankenstein – A Made-Up Vintage Blancpain Fifty Fathoms ‘Bronze’
Auction houses do not always get it right, as many of my articles have shown. Not getting it right is one thing, but going ahead with a sale after Perezcope alerts you to an obvious Frankenstein wa…

Daniel JeanRichard's name is legendary, as is his position as the originator of watchmaking in the Swiss Jura mountains. But the tale of the young man who taught himself to repair and build #watches is really an allegory of the birth of the industry!

Reconsidering the Folklore of Daniel JeanRichard - Grail Watch
Daniel JeanRichard, often hailed as the first watchmaker of the Neuchâtel Mountains, symbolizes the genesis of Swiss watchmaking. His achievements extend beyond legend; he established the system of établissage, fostering craftsmanship in the region. By imparting skills and coordinating production, JeanRichard transformed the local economy and shaped horology for centuries.

From the "Everything Old is New Again" department, here's a 1928 story of a jeweler who bought a flashy yellow Baby #Peugeot sports car with applied advertisements for his shop. Should we call that a wrap? It certainly is "a little gem!" #Advertising #Watches

You probably know the name Urban Jürgensen, one of the greatest #watchmakers of the 19th century. But wait until you hear about his little brother Jörgen Jörgensen (1780–1845), the "Dog Days King" who executed a coup and took over #Iceland!

And who were these talented craftspeople? Many were immigrants from France, Italy, or Germany. Or they came from families that descended from the Huguenots, who were Calvinist Protestants that escaped religious persecution in France and landed around Europe, including Geneva.

When Swiss law first allowed companies to register brands and trademarks in the late 19th century, many watchmakers rushed to register one. But it was not yet clear exactly what a trademark was or how it should be used. Many "missed the mark", if you forgive the pun! /1

A week in and I'm still reaching for the new Sinn 613 UTC nearly every day. Wore it all weekend while working outside. Wearing it with a dress shirt today. It's the real deal!

Here it is! My new Sinn 613 St UTC is a "civilian" homage to the legendary EZM1, with a complicated movement reminiscent of the SZ02. #watches

I've got something new sitting on my desk this morning! Happy to unbox my first #Sinn watch! I'll be wearing this one quite a lot I think! #watches

Today's Nomos Tangomat GMT has the classic Tangente case, the in-house automatic movement, and a very low-key GMT complication: Press the button at 2 to advance the central hour hand through 24 time zones with airport codes shown at 9; home time is shown at 3 on a 24 hour scale! #watches

Wearing one of my delightful weirdo #watches today!

After finding a rough example at a swap meet I searched 3 years for this sweetie to pop up. Love the faceted crystal, textured green dial, and "Space Invaders" markers. Don't love the draggy date corrector on the otherwise-good Cal. 5200!

I've wanted a Sinn #watch for a long time. They're maybe the most-legit tool watch brand, focused on innovative materials and cases, useful complications, and incredible value. I decided to pull the trigger yesterday on an incredible diving chrono that ticks all the boxes for me! More next week!

When I visited the new @moserwatches boutique at @stephensilver in Menlo Park California last week I was lucky enough to get some hands-on time with the new Streamliner Tourbillon Skeleton Boutique Edition. It's just gorgeous and impeccably finished.

I picked up something really special this week at Stephen Silver in Menlo Park: The new Louis Erard x Vianney Halter Le Régulateur Part II!

I love the playful details pulled from the Antiqua and the little touches: A unique case, riveted bezel and crown, and of course the multi-piece bi-metal dial.

I stopped H. Moser & Cie. boutique in Menlo Park, California yesterday with a good friend. Such an amazing experience! They also have a MB&F boutique, and a great selection of independent watchmakers at Stephen Silver. Of course we both had to take something home!

By the way, the giant ugly blingy watch that Tom Brady is wearing at the #SuperBowl is apparently a Jacob & Co. Caviar Tourbillon. It cost three quarters of a million bucks.
